my cricket would work.  2.5 pounds, great trigger and plenty accurate for squirrels.

+2 on the Cricket.  It has one of the shortest "action lengths" meaning OAL minus barrel length.  No wasted space on this little rifle.
anybody ever make a folding stock for a cricket? now that would be a hoot! and perfect for this application.

Not that I know of, but I'm thinking carbon fiber or aluminum would be the way to go.

I made a folding stock for my Marlin 915Y buckaroo.  Makes it one compact packer.  We made a box that holds it and my .22 handgun and some ammo and a cleaning kit.  ;)  I should be able to get some pics tomorrow.  ;)  With the stock folded and slung over my shoulder, I can flip it forward and take sitting rabbits pretty quick.  I made the rear peep sight from a thumb screw.  ;)

If you have a centerfire handgun for defense and you just want a survival gun for small game, consider an air pistol with a detachable or folding stock.
For the intended purpose, it would be as good and in some cases have an advantage. If you start with a high quality, powerful air pistol like a Sheridan pump or the new Browning magnum springer you can reliably take rabit, squirrel or pigeon.  The advantages to an airgun are less legal hassles and less noise.  Just having a firearm can be arrestable in many situations where a pellet gun would either be OK or just ignored.  You can have a short barrel and folding stock on an airgun with no SBR legal hassles because airguns aren't considerd 'firearms' by the Fed legal definition of the word.  That lets you get more compact than you can practically do with a 'real' gun.  The low noise and small package make it possable to bag a critter where you may not want to advertise your presence or actions.
During the depression my grandfather used a Benjamin Franklin pump pistol to bag game while he was roaming around the country with his mother.  In the country, no problem, just hunt. In a city park, be discreet... and hunt.  That was then, this is now, but yesterday's lessons still hold true.  He favored an air pistol because he could hide it from bigger kids or from any adults.
A better gun isn't better when it gets taken away.  A 22 is better than a pellet gun, unless you can't have a firearm........

Those are some great points.  Also, a tin of 250 pellets will take less room and be less weight.  Crossman has a nice 12-14" pump pistol and at one point made a detachable stock for it.  I used one years ago for pigeon and rat control on a farm.  Deadly to about 30 yards.

Yep, Crosman 1377.   That was the first firearm I ever purchased for myself at the ripe ole age of 12.  ;)  They used to make a 1322 version also, which I really wish I could get now.  In .177 caliber though, it'll get 600 fps give or take and I killed many, many red squirrels, fox squirrels and rats with that pistol.  They have some really beautiful stocks for them available now too.  I wish it wasn't so hard to get one shipped here to MI, because I'd have to have another.  My other one lasted over 20 years.  hehe

I don't remember where I saw it, but IIRC they are offering the 1322 again.

Thanks for that info on Fedtactical. When I saw your response I checked there and I almost bought one from them. The price was OK, not great but OK, and they said they had them in stock. Before I checked out on the website I entered in my zip code to check the shipping cost. I had to pay just about another $17.50 for shipping, (actually cost only about $8 if sent by USPS Priority Mail), thier "handling" fee, and manditory insurance. An uptick of about 34% just to send it to me. I declined and will try to buy one somewhere else. One thing I really don't like is people/business who try to make additional profit from inflated shipping and "handling" fees. I would rather pay more for the item and get reasonable shipping....<><.... :)
