Handi - handicap??
« on: November 10, 2011, 04:52:41 PM »
I have become enamored with handi's over the last few years, or like most of us , I would not be here. One shortcoming I seem to see though is weather resistance. I have thought of getting some synthetic stocks, but that would not do much for the rest. I have one synthetic stocked all stainless rifle, but it si no deer gun. What if anything do the old hands here do or use (other than setting by the fireplace sipping Jack) in foul weather? A stainless shorty, with a handigrip stock , or a completely parkerized one, in a maxi, with a low powered fixed scope would seem to be about ideal for trudging about in pea soup fog, snow, and drizzle. My blued palletwood handi however is a candidate for instant rust unless I maybe spray the wood with grout sealer or something, and silicone the rest.

Some laminates and a good gun kote / dura coat  ;)

Midway has synthetics in all makes and shapes that the factory uses , think it was $15 for the forarm of choice and $32 for most of the butt stocks..

I oil mine every couple days during season but when I return home after a rain or snow hunt it gets put in front of the wood stove until dry, then oiled and it is ready for the next trip out. None of my blued handis have any rust and the wood is sealed pretty good on most, I have seen lines on just two layers on my pallet wood lam swell slightly while hunting in the rain.... I am guessing a regular PW stock would be better in the rain than one of the lesser expensive lams. But just keep using it and oiling it. Some here may disagree but even though these are my favorite guns I use them, they are for hunting and if it is raining that day it is still hunting season and I am not staying in, I want to go out and play with my friends.

Paste wax has served me well for a long time. Just rub a thin layer on, let it dry and buff it. If it is too shiny, rub another thin layer on and let it dry. Protects the metal and wood.

I really like Boeshield.  Spray it on, let it dry, water runs off like a fine auto wax job.

I am going to try out Mossy oaks shotgun and rifle camo kit on my turkey gun next spring.  It says they are supposed to help weather proof them somewhat.  http://www.mossyoakgraphics.com/shotgun-rifle-mossy-oakr-camo-gun-kit-903.html

Ive refinished all of my handi stocks.. its been a bit of work.. but its been fun.. and I end up with a "prettier" piece of wood that is substantially more weather resistant..

I sand them all down to bare wood.. working my way to 600 grit dry paper.. normally I do not stain or paint them.. I like the "blonde" look of the bare wood..

I then seal them with 8-10 coats of spray high gloss polyurithane (outdoor type).. (1 coat a day.. takes a while to get this done).. I end up with an extremely thick protective layer, that is clear/glossy, that is rock hard.. that is very resistant to scratches and dents.. and also weather resistant..

I havent found a good solution for the metal yet.. Im hesitant to use alot of oil since the guns are so sensitive to getting even a drop on the latch.. Ive been thinking about trying duracoat or brownells gun-kote.. both offer a simple, do-it-yourself type solution that is fairly inexpensive..

Use a good gun oil and you won't have a problem on blued guns, I've hunted for over 50yrs here in the wet state of Washington and never with a stainless or weatherized firearm, never had a problem with rust, I use Eezox, but Breakfree CLP is commonly available and works excellent at protecting from rust.

???  Where do ya get that idea ?
People have been hunting for centuries in inclemant weather wihout the immediate formation of rust with nothing more than basic care.
Dry the wet gun and oil it and it'll be the same as any other "cared for" gun that's been around for decades.
Stainless Steel can rust too if neglected and just as fast as blued.

I realize that proper care goes a long way in preventing rust etc. My go to gun in bad weather is a stainless /synthetic marlin 22 mag. One day I was going down the riverbank and slipped, it was raining and slick, spotty snow on the ground. I carry the gun muzzle down in those cases, and when I busted my rear sliding down, the muzzle rammed into the mud for 8-10 inches and then into the sand. When I got up the barrel was plugged, and sand all over. I removed the magazine, unloaded it, hung it upside down from the sling in a riffle in the river for a few minutes. I cut a willow switch and used it as a ramrod to dig the dirt out of the barrel to make sure it was unplugged and then put the gun underwater and sucked water through the barrel until it looked clean. Put a cartridge in and fired one, no problem, back in action. Spent the rest of the day in the field, not on an hour plus round trip back into the house. The gun sat in a corner for 2 days until I had time to get to it, I washed it out with very hot water, let it dry, sprayed WD40 copiously over everything, and hung it in the rack. Things like that happen not infrequently. I could see myself sticking a completely stainless handi action in top rack dishwasher if it had sand etc in it. My blued ones.... not so much. I have noticed very tiny rust particles here and there on some barrel surfaces, even though I wipe them down occasionally even when just setting in the rack. Not on my old winchester or browning though. I dont expect the blue job to be comparable, just getting suggestions on what is better than wd40.

WD40 is a penetrant.. and really shouldnt be used on firearms..

buy yourself some decent gun oil.. and throw the WD40 back in the tool box where it belongs..

I really like militec-1... but have used just about everything from rem oil to hoppes 9 to CLP...

all of them will do a better job of protecting your rifles than WD40...

Yup.. its FAR better than nothing, but never my choice. Any self proclaimed "gun oil" is likely going to be better.

My father in law doesnt take care of his guns at all.  For I dont know how many years now he just leaves his blued ruger .270 leaning in the corner behind the front door, usually fully loaded with one in the chamber.  Once I married his daughter I constantly got on to him for leaving it loaded.  He stopped after he accidently shot a hole in the floor.   He has never once cleaned it from what I could tell when I cleaned it for him and it gets quite wet in the snow up here.  It does have a little surface rust, but I was surprised how little there was for how horrible he treats it.

I was a duck hunting guide and my 870 got a Krylon Camo paint job. We hunted in a nasty salt water marsh and it was very hard on my equipment. the Krylon paint was applied after I degreased it with rubbing alcohol. works fine. and any scratches are easly touched up. CLP or rem oil works fine for the Inside.  still looks good after 15 years. a couple of guides even lightly sanded the wood and painted it as well. the paint on the wood seemed to wear off in time. I just put some wax on mine so it repelled the water.

My SE Alaska guns were treated with Black-T over Parkerizing.  I never had to worry about rust, although I did make sure that the bores were greased.  With 165 inches of rain per year, plus skiff rides over salt water, this held up year after year.  There were scratches from rocks but even those didn't rust.  I did keep a coat of car wax on the outside surfaces and the wood so that helped also.

Have a big can of this on my bench! I bought two and used one up. It's remarkable stuff with hundreds of practice uses!!! Have you read the can?? Cures heat blisters on dogs can be used on plants....
Neat stuff!!

Yeah CW read the can, read the brochures, bought a sample size and tried it out.  That was 15 or so years ago.  They've changed the formula slightly a couple of times.  The original stuff was better IMO but the current formula is still better than most other products out there

I Duracoat just about every gun I own, especially the Handis. ;)  Some were done better than others, but none of them have ever rusted like they did before.
