Deer hunting with a 243 Encore Pistol...........
« on: November 11, 2011, 01:47:46 PM »
Last weekend I shot a deer with my 243 Encore pistol. The round I was using was a 85gr Nosler bullet. You might say good deal but my issue is the deer wasnt 20ft from me when I shot him. I watched him take his last breath and then go limp. Looking at him he raised his head as if to say Im not done yet so I put another round in him. after 2 rounds in the boiler room the only blood I seen ws the blood coming from his noes. I couldnt find a entrance or exit wound on him . ,  rolled him over there would be a puddle of blood but no, nothing.
My question is , is the nosler tip the wrong bullet for deer hunting if so what would be a better choice?

I guess I'd need to know what bullet you were using.  Also the best way to see where bullets penetrate is to gut and skin the animal then look inside at the ribs.  Bullet holes are much easier to see from the inside of the animal.

Why argue with or about a dead deer? You didn't have to chase/track him. I presume your deer was closer then 20 ft to you if I read that correct.

At the velocity of that bullet I'm surprised you didn't have it blow up on the hide. I'm thinking you had one big mess inside the deer.

Im using 85gr Nosler partions, Im not arguing over a dead deer and he was less than 20ft from me when he was hit. He was pretty messy on the inside with a small entrance hole. Im glad I didnt have to track him cause I wouldnt have never found him. But my concern came from a shot I put on a deer last yr at 200yrds , drilled him in the boiler room , he kicked a little like he was hit and slowly walked away never to be found. I tried tracking him but no blood trail and no deer. Thats why Im asking if theres another 243 rd that would give me a complete pass threw?

I have had great success with a 95 gr Nosler Ballistic tip.  Deer shot from 30 yds to 236 yards.  Bullets preformed perfect.  Sounds like the partitions aren't expanding very good at your velocitied.

Try plain ol' 100 grain Remington Core Lokts.........They are very accurate in my Encore 243 15"

I have a Remmy 700 243 that loves the Coreloc!

I will try them before I go to another caliber.

If the Rem CorLokt shoot good in your rifle you can't go wrong with them and the price is good..

They shoot MOA out of my rifle, but a friend of mine makes the ones for my Encore.
