2 3/4" sabots?
« on: November 12, 2011, 03:56:46 AM »
I can't seem to find a consistently accurate 12 gauge sabot for my 870 cantilever scope mounted fully rifled shotgun.  Suggestions???

Has it got the 3" chamber?  I personally got the best accuracy in my pump using Remmy Buckhammers.  I had a 3 shot group in the 3" range with iron sights, so I was quite happy with that.  ;)  Sometimes hard to get shorter ones to be accurate, but I don't have an 870 but my brother does and he likes the Remington Accutips and Hornady SST's.  Have you tried the Lightfield Hybrid?  http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/box-of-5-lightfield-hybred-light-12-ga-2-3-4-1-1-4-oz-sabot-slugs.aspx?a=709630

2 3/4" chamber.  Currently "Sighted in" with Winchester Supreme Elite but occasional flyer troubles me.  Accuracy only marginal but perhaps my expectations are too high.

Had you tried the Lightfields?  I've heard good things from a few people on those, albeit I haven't used them.  These 2-3/4" buck hammers might improve the accuracy, albeit not a sabot.  http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/15916-5.html   http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/30308308-1.html

I'd probably try these also though.  My bro's 870 loves these and he put down a 150 pound deer last year with one.  It knocked the deer sideways 3 feet and it looked up at him once then laid it's head down and died.  Never got up again.

I know my shot gun isn't a 12ga. but it is a 20ga. with 3 inch chambers that really crappy groups so bad I took it back to the dealer as it was a new shot gun.
The dealer told me the 3 inch slugs didn't do well in the remington 870 for some reason. He gave me 2 boxes of Buck hammers in 2 3/4 inch. they work for decent groups and did hammer the Buck I shot with it last year.

Follow up...  I went to Dick's and got lucky.  Rem premier copper solids 1 oz. HP 2 3/4" magnum sabot slugs were on sale with rebate.  First shot from previously "sighted in" winchester sabots hit 20 clicks high and 9 clicks right @ 50 yards.  It's unbelieveable how much variance there is from different manufacturers.  After 1 sight adjustment next 2 shots were right where I wanted, about 2"high.   I only hope they won't go and change their slugs next year.  I bought 4 boxes so I'm ok for hopefully a few years.  I recommend this load with 12 gauge rem fully rifled barrel.

My 1187 will not shoot any of the saboted ammo I've tried very well but it will put the 2 3/4" Buckhammers a hairs width from a clover leaf at 100 yds.  My boy drew a shotgun only youth hunt last week so I bought some of the Managed Recoil Buckhammers and sighted it in.  Groups opened up to about 3", totally adequate for a deer, but the recoil felt like a popgun compared to the full power Buckhammers.  He killed a doe at about 30 yds and didn't even notice any recoil.
