.25-06 vs .270

This has probably been rehashed.  If so I will look again.  But for a predator, varmint, deer, and antelope long distance gun which would you choose?  It seems .270 are easier to find.  Are they cheaper than .25-06?  Just got my .308 and want to get a long distance caliber next just because.  Does .25-06 have less recoil?  From what I have seen with ballistics it seems that they have about the same drop at 300 yards but the 270 uses a heavier bullet.  I have heard for smaller critters like varmints its best to have a light bullet that will fragment on impact.  Trying to get a handle on all this hunting stuff before my kids are old enough to go.  Thanks.

Or would a .243 be enough?  I have plenty of varmints and predators around our place but I want to get a quick clean kill on antelope at around 300 yards.  And I dont plan on taking that long of a shot until I have practiced and am quite good at it.  If I cant put it down quickly with one shot from my handi then I wont take the shot.

I do believe the 25 goes lighter on the low end and the .270 goes higher on the high end as for bullet weights but I have had both and they are both excellent. Powder capacity is identical due to both being a 30-06 case just necked to their respective calibers. So once you find a bullet you like either one will work very well, it is just that IF you ever went on an elk trip, the .270 is capable of a heavier bullet, and would in theory be a better elk gun. I know you didn't ask about an Elk gun, but you do have the 308 which would work great for that. So either caliber you asked about would do the trick just fine.
 The .243 would also work, I had one once and didn't care for it but it was a very rough action bolt that I hated... so it may not have been the caliber so much as the rifle itself.

Thanks Janitor.  I didnt want my calibers to overlap in purpose too much.  Which is why I was thinking the 25 or 243 would be sufficient for those tasks mentioned.  I plan on using the .308 for deer and elk and my all around gun til I get more barrels.  Plan on getting a .45-70 for moose.

I got the 25-06 barrel because Handi barrels are 26" vs 243 and 270 which are 22".  So you can use a slower powder and get better performance.  Reach out farther and all that... Caliber KOOL factor too.

And an Alaska hunters posts hereon had ALOT to do with my choice also.

the 270 i have had was great cal 243 i have shot a lot  of deer and lopes. my son likes the 25-06 on elk deer pigs. he has mag calibers but he sure likes his 25-06 if you reload the 30-06 can be loaded just about the same  but i have not shot a 25-06 just compared ballistics your choice any of them will do the job.

with the same weight bullet, same barrel length, the 270 produces the highest velocity, BUT, the 25 goes down to 75gr V-Max, and 85 gr Btsp, while the 270 low end is 90 gr with not as good BC. Also, most 270 barrels are 22", most 25-06 barrels are 24-26 inches. Using a slower powder that extra 4 inches of barrel could mean 125+ FPS gain in muzzle velocity. My book (Lyman 49) shows an accuracy load of 3401 fps for a 270 90 gr HP, and 3740 fps for a 75 gr V-max. If it was going to be your only gun I would say 270, but for light, long range stuff, go with the 25.

I have a .25-06 - it's a good round for prairie dogs, especially on windy days. Works well for antelope, too.
 
I will say a long day at a dog town gets a little weary with it, compared to my .223 or .204...

You could always save your $$ and load lighter bullets in the .308 Win, but what fun would that be... Hornady makes a 110gr V-Max and some of the 30 Carbine bullets would also work well.


If you have to have a new barrel, I say go with the 25-06. It's a shooter!

Ok what are you calling long range???  The .308 aka 7.62x51 NATO is, was and always will be a 1,000 yard cartridge for paper targets and a 600 yard hunting cartridge.  The .25'06 (which I also have) is a 400 yard Deer cartridge and good for 600 yards on smaller varmits.  The .270 is somewhere in between, not enough bullet weight to carry 1,000 yards into small groups, but fast enough to take deer, and antelope at 600 yards.  Anything out to 400 yards any of the three will work VERY well.

I like the 25-06 . I have hunted with one for over 25 years. I got it to shoot deer and ground hogs. On deer the longest shot with it is 100 yards or under. On ground hogs in the 400 yard range. On paper it has been shot at up to 500 yards with no complaints other than wind can effect it . I only use one bullet 100 gr Nosler BT , 53 gr H 4831 with BL-2 primers ( listed in Nosler reloading man. ) . I have never heard of a 25-06 that wasn't accurate. The only personal experince I have with a 270 is necking down once fired brass to make 25-06 rounds when shooting friends gave them to me because they didn't reload.

Personally, I prefer the 7mm-08 and the .308, and I guess if I could only have one, it would be the .308......or would it?

I have to agree with keith44 that the 308 is a long range (or short range) number.
The 308 is well known to "reach out and touch someone/something"
Also, ammo can be had round the world and in the corners.

The .308 pictured in my avatar is my if I can only have one centerfire rifle gun.  Mostly because right now I can only have one centerfire rifle.  But I plan on chopping it to 16.5 inches, just cause.  And want a reason to get another barrel.  Just want to have a broad range of fun calibers.  Like to plan out things way in advance.  I new I was getting that.308 survivor about two years ago and just go it about a week ago.

Since i got my 25-06 handi barrel i love it. the mix of flat trajectory lower recoil than both your 308 and a 270 and the ability to shoot the heavier primiem bullets for larger animals in my opinion is idea. A 243 seems to really fit your bill but if between the 25-06 and 270 my 270 is collecting dust.

Had the OP said deer and elk then the 270 would be the winner but varmit end pushed the 25-06 into the winning circle.

Thanks for all the posts guys.  I am really leaning toward the .25-06.  I like that it isnt as common and that make it a little more interesting to me.  I like to do things that everyone I know isnt doing.

  I might as well put my thoughts in also.
  I don't think I can add anything special to what many others have said, and I think keith44 about summed it all in a nutshell. I have had a few 25-06 rifles and could never warm up to them, they are a great cal. and will do what they were designed to do, great for deer ect. but I almost always shot ground hogs and crows with mine maybe thats why I never warmed up to them as I had a browning safari grade 243 that I used for varmints, and have a love affair with, lol, and the 25-06 may have been too much of a good thing. The 270 can hardly be beat for the deer sized quarry, many just as good but few are better all the way around, long or short range it will do the job. It just depends what you want your rifle to do and it does have more recoil too as well as muzzle blast. JMO

 For shooting any animate target over 100 pounds, I'll take a .270 over a 25-06 any day.
