Another range session with the boys
« on: November 13, 2011, 11:22:06 AM »
The rings for Wyatt's red/green dot sight came yesterday so this morning I put it on his rifle in place of the red dot sight I had sighted in on it earlier yesterday. I took it and my .22 rifle and a pair of Ruger centerfire revolvers to my range today.

Wyatt was here when I was gathering up the ammo and wanted to know if he could shoot his rifle and I told him sure enough after I got it sighted in. He took his little Crickett rifle up to the range as I took the other guns. We were met half way by Evan and Bradley. The three of them gathered around while I first sighted in my rifle on which I had just placed a Leupold 2-7 rimfire scope. I then sighted in Wyatt's rifle.

I then had them set up a bunch of plastic bottles at around 15 yards. They had a mixture of Wet Ones containers and medicine bottles my prescriptions come in. Wyatt was first up and got five of six. Bradley followed then Evan both of whom also got five of six. I then showed them how to take down two medicine bottles with one shot using the same rifle. They didn't believe I could.

I then gave them all another turn and I think they all again hit five of six. That dot sight really has improved their hit ratio especially Wyatt. He is so short he can't put the stock on his shoulder and then get his head down on it to look thru the peep sight that came on it. He can sure enough put a red or green dot on a target and pull the trigger tho. At the end of that session there were three rounds left and Wyatt got to shoot them since it was after all his rifle.

They had fun and hit a high percentage of their targets. I then shooed them away and did some shooting with my Ruger Bisley .44 Special and the BH .45 Colt. I think Matt and Heather slept thru it all.

HEH, like one of my grandsons. He'd tuck the stock under his arm. Don't know how he was able to hit with it but he did. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Sounds like another good time.
We've been moving and I haven't had time for any fun.
Maybe next spring..... :(

You are a good grandpa.  ;D It's good for the kids and it good for you. I have some wonderful memories of taking my grandkids shooting and fishing. I can still picture taking my first grandson dove hunting. He would carry his little single shot Daisy BB gun and wear his grandma's hunting vest so he could be outfitted like grandpa. He got to be the retriever and loved it. He also got to finish off any cripples with his BB gun. I can still picture him in my mind heading out thru the mesquite bushes wearing that vest that was so big it looked like a dress looking for a downed bird. Hard to believe he will be 28 years old in January.

Nice to see you're not insistent on iron sights. Scopes and these newer designs for sights are real marvels, and add to the fun of shooting.

Maybe they'll take an interest in more precise shooting. If that's the case, I always like to pick up some spent an non-reloadable shotshell hulls. I always like the way they disappear when you hit them.

Somewhere in the mix there are the safety lessons and my favorite on is to take a centrfire rifle and shoot a milk jug full of water with it. The jug blows up. I then put the jug next to my arm and tell the kids to imagine what my arm would look like if I had been hit. They get that, and I could tell they took the lesson to heart.

My all time favorites for plinking water filled reactive targets is the CCI mini mag hollowpoint. They expand quickly and seem to make a more dramatic splash.

Another fun reactive target is the cheap Root Beer.
Man those thing really explode.  ;D
The big grocery store here runs a few big sales each year.
One thing they put on sale is the off brand soda's.
You can buy a case for like a buck.
Makes for some fun times for the kiddo's. ;)

Tip of the day:
You might want to keep at least 25 feet away.  :o   ;D
