DEER.
« on: November 13, 2011, 01:44:34 PM »
Gun season opened up yesterday morning. I never heard a shot til 8 am, never saw a deer, no tracks, no sign. Went this evening to a different area. Checked several bedding areas and trails, never heard a shot in 2 hours. My neighbor said he hadn't seen a deer at his feeder in over a month. Don't know where to try next. Even the trails had no fresh tracks on them. I hope everybody else is having better luck. POWDERMAN.  :( :(

I've only heard of two deer taken so far and day two is well gone.  Most people I've talked to blame the high temps and howling winds.   I prefer the late Muzzleloading season (in early December) to the modern gun season due to the weather being more cooperative recently.

N of Ft Knox in Meade co. 75 deg here and still very windy. Didn't hunt today. Awfully dry here too. Saw some crows yesterday trying to fly West SW, heh, what a sight, the wind would blow them backwards a bit at a time. They finally got going when the wind layed a bit.
I was out several hours yesterday evening and never heard a shot. Chkd several trails and bedding areas, no fresh sign at all. It used to sound like war around here. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I hunt in Oldham County. Have been bow hunting before gun season started. Saw 10 but, never got a shot at any. A friend got an 8 ptr. Sunday. I went this a.m. and shot a buck with my T/C 44 magnum, hit him twice! and wasn't able to find him after 3 1/2 hours of looking! Will look agin in a.m. Most frustrating day of hunting I have ever had. He jumped both times I shot him. The first time he jumped and slowly walked about 30 yards closer to stand and stopped again. I thought he was going to fall there but, I decided to shoot again as he gave me a good broadside. He jumped again after being shot and slowly walked into woods. I waited 25 minutes and saw blood where I shot him and track where I could tell which trail he went down. Load was 23.5 296 with hornady 240 xtp. Both shots appeared to be good lung/vital area hits. I know I am sighted in as I sighted in from my deer stand with targets at the trails.  I keep repeating to myself, 'how can he be hit twice with a .44 and not be down???"

last year i shota small 6 point 3 times with my .308 at about 50 yards he ran around the hill like he wasnt even hit a friend of mine shot him with a .357 rifle and he dropped but he said the deer seemed to be unhurt when he shot him. so sometimes they can take way more than you think before going down... i have an uncle that killed a 150 inch 10 point about 4 years ago he said it showed no signs of being hit after 4 rounds from his 45/70 but the 5th brought him down. all good shots to the vitals.

ted, you are definately not alone, I am surprised that the load you list did not offer better results.  I was shooting a 300 grain XTP over 22.1 grains of 296 out of my Super RedHawk a few years ago and shot a decent 6 pointer that was trotting, angling away from me.  I had what I thought was enough lead, but when I skinned the deer, I found I had hit him in the hip, and the bullet exited at the front of the opposite shoulder.  Every vertebrae was destroyed, as well as the one hip and opposite shoulder.  Very destructive bullets.  Now I have to also say that I used the 240 grain XTP bullets on several deer, and never saw one go more than 20 yards with a soild hit, also I have never seen a well hit deer (buck or doe) jump when shot.  I am guessing that either the deer was not hit as well as you think, or the bullets failed to open at all, and just cut a neat little hole through the deer.  I was using a 45-70 a few years later loaded with 405 grain hard cast flat points over 53.1 grains of IMR 3031.  A nice eight pointer was chasing a doe and they passed by me seven times, at a range of 10 to 25 yards.  At each pass I would center the bucks chest or shoulders in the cross hairs and squeeze off a shot.  Each time there was absolutely no reaction from the buck, but the doe would change directions.  Finally the buck slowed down to a walk, then just laid down and bled out.  All seven shots had passed through the lungs, both shoulders had two holes in them, and the heart also had two holes in it.  I was able to recover one bullet from a tree stump, it showed almost no expansion.

Keith44,
Wow! 7 times with a 45-70!!! I am learning a lot about hunting. Unfortunately, it all seems to be from the schools of hard knocks/paying your dues. Went to look for deer again this a.m. and couldn't find him. I have had several hunters seen their deer jump up when shot. Theirs were lung shots when it happened. I have concluded deer probably wasn't hit as well as I think. Another possibility is that I should not have shot it a second time. When I first hit it it jumped up, walked about 30 yards and stopped. I thought it was goint to lay down there and I debated to myself whether to just watch or take a second shot. Maybe the second shot put it in hyper adrenaline mode?? If I am in a situation like this again I will wait a little longer to see what the deer does

Didn't hunt Mon or Tuesday, too windy and wet for my liking. Went out this evening, legs weak so I took the mower to the fencerow and backed up into the cedars overlooking the field, I've seen deer there all year long except for the past month or so. After about 15 min I decided I wanted to button up my jkt so I layed the rifle accross my lap, took off the gloves and was buttoning up when a big buck went running accross the field from the bottom just below my house. He'd been bedded within maybe 75 yds of my house, not unusual. Nope, never got a shot. A few min later I saw 5 turkeys walking the fields edge going North, a few min later some more came out of the brush into the field and headed South, there were 24 and several red beards. Then the ones from the North went South. I'll be more careful tomorrow if I go out.
The scope on the 94 will not come back far enough to see well without really leaning into it. The mounts and base are weaver. I ground the front ring to allow it to come back as far as it can go before the large part of the scope stops it. I've got to figure something out different for next year. Our pastor called and said he killed a big buck for me, I'll pick it up tomorrow. MEAT, praise the Lord. POWDERMAN.  Grin Grin

Powderman, an honest missed opportunity, a minor setback.  I have had to umm, relieve my self and had deer come out of nowhere, when the gun is out of reach, not just out of hand.

Ted, the hunters school of hard knocks is one of the worlds best educators.  I do not consider myself an expert, even after chasing Whitetails for 32 years, and small game for 35 years.  A fine journey I am having though, and hope the same for you.  This one buck may just be your "the one that got away"  I always try to break down the structural integrity of every game animal I shoot.  By that I mean disrupt the skeletal structure in the process of disrupting the circulatory, respiratory and nervous systems.  This limits the travel even further.  I have heard and read that a lung only shot stops an animal within 60 yards, a heart shot or a bleed out shot lets them go 100 yards.

KEITH. A few years ago I shot a running button at about 85-90 yds and he ran close to 100 yds before folding up. 405 grfp from my 4570 with a hole cleanly through the heart. It busted several ribs on the other side and caused bleeding and bruised ribs too. YES, they sure can run 100 yds shot through the heart. Picked the deer up ths morning, finally got it skinned. Cut off the neck, ribs, and front legs,  hung the rest. Had a heck of a time getting it hung to skin. Ended up using a rope over a limb and pulled it up with my car on a metal gambrel, is that the right word?? Like to froze my hands. I'm mighty thankful for the meat. Couldn't find a neighbor home to help me get it hunng, my wife helped a lot too. YEP, she's a keeper, married 31 years.  ;D
DOUG. I wish you luck on your hunt. Be safe. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Several years ago I had a great lil dog, mostly terrier. The smoke house doors btm is 3 - 4 in off the ground. Every time we'd go outside she wouldn't even LOOK at that door, good dog. After the deer had been hanging about a week or so we decided we wanted a neck roast so went to cut it off. The lil dog would disappear a while every evening but like I said, she wouldn't even look in the direction of that deer. Opened the door and the neck was bare about 8 in up, nothing but bone. Glad that was as far as she could reach. WE had her about 14 years, still miss her. HEH, I blocked the door so she couldn't get in. Found a neighbors cat in there once chewing on a ham, BOOOOM, nice kitty. POWDERMAN.  Grin Grin

Friday morning before season opened I was getting ready to leave for work.  Looked out the back door and saw a deer on a bee line toward the house.
Not a doe.  2 year old basket 6 point with his nose about 2 feet off the ground doing a good impersonation of a beagle hound minus the barking.
He was all over the back yard.  Back and forth.  Disappeared into the weeds then came back to the house and ran around again before heading back into the weeds.

Never had seen one trail a doe like that.  She was gone but not too long past.

Haven't seen the buck since!
He was a bit crazy!

No luck this year.

Saw one 4-6 point LATE after dark on Friday.
Spent two days in the stand. What few are there are moving after dark.

We've still got 6 days left in the modern gun season, temps are still in the mid to upper 60's so I'll probably stick with plan A and just hunt the late ML season

KEITH. Thanks, zone 3 is me. No luck this year. I did count 27 turkeys in one group yesterday evening. I unloaded and cleaned the rifles last night. I was really hoping to put some meat in the freezer. I'm really thankful for the one that was given to us. All worked up and in the freezer now, having some backstrap for supper with mashed potatos and gravy. Used to be a lot of deer right around here, not so much anymore. I need to create a small food plot or do something different next year. I used to sow a big bag of milo every year, they loved it, so did the other small game. Had open heart 8 years ago and have a badly enlarged heart so I just can'
t hunt hard like I used to. Hard to breathe today. Some days I can, others I can't. Hope you make meat. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Hey POWDERMAN,
Sorry you didn't get one during modern gun season, Muzzleloading season is getting close, and Turkey's are good eatin too.  I know what you mean about not being able to breathe well, I've been battling a combination of asthma and emphysema for 8 years.  So far I can do what I want to do, just at a slower pace.  Don't forget you can trap rabbits to help fill the freezer too.
