My Son's Coastal Blacktail Buck Nov 13/11
« on: November 14, 2011, 06:23:46 AM »
For my son's 10th birthday I bought him a T/C Contender carbine in 30-30 he hunted with it for years then when he got older he wanted to move up to a bolt rifle so he started using my Rem 700 Mtn Rifle in 280 Rem.

Over the years I took over his Contender even sent the barrel to he that cannot be mentioned on this site and had him rechamber it to his 308 Win X 444 = my deer hunting load is 150gr Rem Core=Loks @ 2620fps.

My son is now married and turning 27 in just a couple of weeks so I talked him into going out for a morning deer hunt when he got here I handed him his old Contender rifle.

We drove a whole 20 minutes to a spot that I found earlier this year that has very little hunting pressure I parked at a fork in the road and sent him on his way into the nicer of the two areas.

Not 4 minutes after he left the truck I heard a shot he had spotted a nice sized 2X2 blacktail buck following a does at appr 100 yards from him he had maybe walked 250 yards from the truck on his way to the logging slash the deer was crossing the hillside right above his head when he saw it.

Anyway I headed back to the truck grabbed our wheelbarrow and headed up the road to find him the road is washed out so we can't drive in.

Not a bad little blacktail buck if I do say so myself and he is very happy...    :)

Good on you and your son. Great pix, but better memories.

Very nice! Those moderate-velocity cartridges sure do work well on medium game. And at those velocities, you get premium bullet performance from standard cup-and-core projectiles.
