Your preference
« on: November 14, 2011, 08:58:26 AM »
Hopefully this is in the right forum :-\

Your game has a life weight of 200-250 pound ( not a bear)

Your range is 100 yards( not critical)

Your rifle is chambered in 45-70 Govt.

Your choice is a 405 gr Rem FN or a 300 gr Rem HP loaded to arrive at the target with similar Energy.
Grouping is not a criteria.

Which would you pick?

Is there any difference in in the performance( expansion)  of the various 300 gr HP?

Fred,

A 45 cal. hole at 100 yds. with a super-fast Flying Ash Can or slower but deeper penetrating Flying Ash Can is about the same.  Which do YOU shoot with greater confidence???  Go with that one.  I tend to like slower and deeply penetrating Flying Ash Cans.

I have suspicions that some 300gr hps are too explosive. The Sierras let a couple of animals get away from me. They didn't leave a blood trail so I suspect over expansion. I don't know about other brands. I switched to Hornaday 350 rn and haven't had a complaint since.

Bilmac:
I have some of those Hdy RN's as well as the Speer 350 gr. FN. Both require more MV/recoil then I'm willing to absorb unless I was hunting Buffalo sized game. ;)

Ash Can's LOL !!
I tend to agree, much to my surprise both of the bullets mentioned happen to end up very close to each other at 100 yards with the same scope setting. Both generate reasonable recoil.

I will have a shootout between those two, possibly a third ( 400 gr. Speer FN) to make a final decision. This is for a hunt in Maine mid January.

Yup you"re right about recoil.  At the time I was looking at loads to stop griz. They were going as fast as I could drive them in my Marlin 95

"Griz" would qualify as Buffalo size for me as well.

Ash Can's LOL !!

I thought you would get a grin from that...and remarkably, it does characterize straight walled wad cutter bullets...which are just a truncated subset to the HP's and FN's.

;) Lately I have been shooting Horn. 350's out of my Marlin..I did shoot an antelope with a 300 grain Horn. HP..VERY EXPLOSIVE...so far the 350's have been excellent on deer and antelope...

I have no use for the lighter bullets in the .45-70.  The 405 is awesome.....

How fast are you pushing those 350 Hdy's?  RN or FN?

;)  Scatter, I have not cronied the 350's nor did I check the 300's...I use Elmer Keith's load of 3031...he recommended for 405 grain bullets...If you knew his recommendations it is a top load, but it shoots well and recoil is not horrible, but noticable....

ive killed deer with both and prefer the 405s for any game animal. The 405 rem is about the only jacketed bullet i will shoot out of a 4570. I opens up even at low velocitys and holds together and about allways gives an exit wound.

In your situation, the 405.  I've switched to 350gr Speers at 1700fps.  Had them up to over 1900 in my #1...ouch!  Mostly use it on hogs...works great.  I'll always opt for heavy rather than lite.
