Pistol bullets for rifles to deer hunt with. Which one?
« on: November 15, 2011, 12:48:34 PM »
Below I have listed what the State of Indiana calls legal calibers for rifles to deer hunt with.
Which one do you like the best?
Why?

Rifles with cartridges that fire a bullet
of .357-inch diameter or larger; have a
minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and
have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches
are legal to use only during the deer firearm
season. Some cartridges legal for deer
hunting include the .357 Magnum, .38-.40
Winchester, .41 Magnum, .41 Special, .44
Magnum, .44 Special, .44-.40 Winchester,
.45 Colt, .454 Casull, .458 SOCOM, .475
Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action Express,
and .500 S&W.

Forestclimber, I have been shooting a plain ole 158 grain jacketed soft nose in my Winchester Model 92 clone for years. I load it to 2000fps, and it kills like a 150 grain jacketed round nose in a 3030 out to about 120 yards.
A couple of years ago I shot a coyote in the left shoulder at a measured 160 yards. It exited the right shoulder, and the coyote never quivered, but simply collapsed. High velocity in hollow points in a rifle are HIGHER VELOCITY, and may not penetrate well on deer.
The bullet I described in 357 magnum is a stopper to be sure. Good luck!

I have a 44 Magnum Ruger carbine, H&R Handi rifle in 45 LC and one in .357 Maximum. The Colt has killed 2 deer, the 44 Mag one. In the future, they both will get some rest as the Maxi is all I'm gonna use for a while. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

I have a 44 magnum the boy carries and I carry a pair of 357 maximums. The Maxi has put 4 deer in my freezer in 2 years, and still have a week and a half to go ;)

I am Loving the .357 Maximum. if you reload it is a very fun and economical cartridge. i shot a 6point buck on opening day with it this year hornady 180 grain SSP bullets work very well with some AA1680 or win 296 powder.  be sure to modify your seating stem for the pointed bullets though. check out .357maximum.com for more details.  i like that it kicks less than a 30-30 but out performs it by a small margin.

Linebaugh, .480 Ruger, .50 Action Express,
and .500 S&W.

As I have killed deer with most of these calibers, I feel I can offer some insight on bullets. Here is what I have had luck with and recommend. As usual Dee is spot on steer clear of hollow points when shooting "pistol" calibers in rifles or carbine length barrels.

I would have a very hard time choosing between my 357 Maxi and the 45 Colt... the 454 is making a hard run to topple both of them....

357 Mag: This one I have much experience with. My #1 choice is a Hornady 158 XTP FP bullet. #2 Speer 170 GD SP.

38-40; This is the orig 10mm... I would have to go with a good SWC profile cast bullet.

41 Mag; I like the heaviest bullets and IIRC Sierra made a 220 SP. I have a Marlin in 41 and a blk Hawk both like this bullet!

41 Spl:  No experience

44 Mag: I'm not a huge fan, but it's a excellent choice and I have had best luck with another Gold Dot bullet. The 270 SP!

44 SPL: I have shot allot from my 696 but never at game.

45 COLT;  Here is another caliber that close to my heart. I have shot a truck load of deer with my long colts. I lie both the Speer and Sierra 300SP bullets. Hornady's XTP is another good one. Speer also now makes a 300 GD for the Casull, but it also works great at rifle vel from the Colt.

454 Casull; that same 300 GD and the mag version of the XTP also in 300 gr. I see FTX has a 200 a 225 and a 250 pointed bullet. I have shot one deer and a coyote with a 200 with success.

458 Socom; Again, no experience. But it approximates 454 ballistics.

475 Linebaugh;  I would choose a good cast bullet.

480 Ruger;  I have fired it, but have no experience hunting with one. But Hornady makes a XTP mag that aught ta work.

50 A&E; Not really a hunting caliber, most use lighter hollow point bullets. But it has the power to work quite well. I no experience on game.

500 S&W; A power house for sure!! Again Hornady and it's XTP bullet is a good choice. Sierra makes good bullets for this one. Even Remington with its 385g bullet from shotgun fame.

You did not mention the 357 Maximum!!! My #1 choice is 180 SSP second choice is. 180 XTP bullet or the Speer 170 GDSP.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the info.  Whatever I decide on, I will be shooting factory ammo.  I don't reload.

Once you jump into reloading, the only regret that you'll have is that you waited so long! ;)

Shoot .500 S&W in 26" Heavy MGM barrel out of Encore. Great barrel from MGM. Using Pro Hunter stocks and longer barrel helps tame it down a lot. Not happy with Hornady 300 gr. FTX since last 2 yrs. 2 bucks hit in shoulder and both times bullet blew up on shoulder. Killed both deer but you still have to look at the post mortem to see how it performed. I prefer pass bullet through and got it with 325 gr. Barnes XPB. Both bullets shot with 40.0 gr Lil Gun = 2,050 fps through chrony. The Barnes blew through shoulder of doe, with very nice enlarged exit hole. Blood trail Stevie Wonder could follow. Both bullets extremely accurate even out to 200 yds where the energy was still 1,400 ftlbs. Jury still out on the Hornady 300 gr. FTX for me. Recoil pretty similar to shooting slugs out of an Encore. If you can tolerate slugs, then you can certainly shoot the .500 similarly. It DOES leave a very nice hole in critters. The recoil is not pleasant but tolerable. Then again, never felt recoil shooting at deer..... Here is photo of this years buck off State rec land in IN.

Muddy,

What kind of scope rings and scope are you using with that .500mag?

Warne rings with Loctite and Nikon 2x7 ProStaff. The .500 killed just about all other rings except these. The Nikon is holding up great but I may swap out to slightly more eye relief. Gee I wonder why?

OK I am intrested like I said in another post I picked up a Handi rifle in 357 for a great price but think that the 357 is a little on the low end.  What is involved with the Maxi.  I do reload most all pistol cartridges,  Someone point me in the right direction.

Why Dinny,
That's some information for sure, but "everything one needs to know"?  I'll challenge that!  ::) :o  Now admittedly, I'm a bit prejudice (Being a long time GBO member) but I think there are some fellows right on here on our own site with as much or more information and knowledge on these calibers... ::)

Here is but a couple recent 357 Maximum topics.

There is topics on this board all the time. many on the max get hashed over and over as its a real popular caliber.

Personally I have been shooting one since shortly after it came out in 1983. In handguns & rifles for hunting, silhouette and paper target shooting.  ;)
If you have a question simply start a topic and ask! We will get the topic rolling and get you the answers you need in no time flat and right here!
