Hunter dies after tussle with buck
« on: November 16, 2011, 05:05:44 AM »

Hope this wasn't anyone here.  Some folks just don't think things through.

ALBION, Ind. --
A northeastern Indiana hunter has died after struggling with a buck he had just shot.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says 62-year-old Paul Smith of Fort Wayne died Monday during a deer reduction hunt at Chain O'Lakes State Park about 20 miles northwest of the city.
It says the Noble County coroner says the death was due to a lacerated liver, possibly suffered during the struggle.
Conservation Officer Erick Bolt says Smith called his son and left a message saying he had shot a buck. When the son called back, Smith told him the deer - still alive - attacked Smith before the hunter killed it with a knife.
A park employee who went to retrieve the buck found Smith sitting against a tree and could not revive him.

I hope you guys learned your lessons with those knives.   :D   Long long time ago I got a call from a buddy who told me about a mutual friend who had earlier that day shot a big buck.  He approached it to notice it would still twitch once in a while.  He pulled a knife, grabbed the rack to pull the head back so he could stick him only to have the ole boy wake back up, jump straight up in the air and turn on him.  He suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung and spent a few days in the hospital.  We went to see him (laugh at him) in the hospital and found out he had actually hit the animals rack ONLY.  This had only stunned the animal long enough for him to get revenge.

Learned my lesson also, Now I have a cold steel spear to finish them off!! Nah I have always told the kids to use 2 bullets if it is still moving ;) . Plus we are not suppose to go on neighboring property(even to chase deer) So the more lead the better.

I always watch a downed deer to see if it is breathing. They may close their eyes but they have to breath. With deer its shoot first and ask questions later. My first and only close encounter with a buck was when a hunting buddy asked me to grab the rack and expose the throat do he could finish it off. That dying buck lifted its head and flung me off. No more grabbing live deer. The next encounter was with a button buck that I head shot at 15 feet and was still breathing. I approached it from behind and touched its hip with my gun barrel and it kicked me so hard I wore a hoof print on my shin for two weeks. The first day of the season this year I shot a buck at 50 yards with a .358 BFG 200 gr bullet at 2640 f.s quartering toward me. The deer was instantly flat on the ground, as I lowered the rifle and ejected the case the deer got up and took two steps into the heavy fence row and woods. After an hour wait I found it dead. The bullet had hit just behind the near shoulder and exited out the far flank behind the ribs yet this animal had strength enough to travel 30 yards before lying down after being knocked flat. Amazing.

Any question and it gets another round. Life is valuable and ammo is cheap.
