That's a tough one.  The colors and head scream coyote, but it seems to be way too tall for a coyote.  Maybe that's what ate my deer way up here in Wisconsin!

well, up in maine they have coyotes with wolf DNA,  and that animal in the picture has the same eyes as my wifes poodle.  I think some genes can stay dormant for many generations and then pop up.
someone needs to kill that thing so a DNA test can be done.

Coloration hints as it being a coydog hybrid!!
Also the head profile seems to be more dog like!
I have seen coydogs in N.W. Lousiana and E.Texas that were much bigger than this animal.

I could buy that...Someone needs to give it a "pill" so that it could be measured & weighed.

Looks like a coyote and a German Shepard might have gotten real friendly for awhile.

That's a pretty dog.  Think if I got one like that I might have to mount the whole thing.  I sure my wife wouldn't mind it on top of her piano.  :)

We are just starting to get yotes here in central Va. I have seen a few so I am no expert. The first one was at a gun shop , the shooter came by to get verfication what he killed was a yote. It was but it look alot like a german shepard. Most I have seem were large and well filled out not like the scrawney ones seen in pictures . Guess when they live in a food rich enviroment they "fill out" . The picture looks alot like the yotes here .

When I first saw it, I'm nowhere near an expert mind you, I thought red wolf.  This is based on photographs I've seen though.  The red wolf is said to have all the genetic makeup necessary to reproduce every breed of dog known, though it could take quite a bit of selective breeding.  There is only one way to find out, so get your tranq guns ready....

wolf....or coyote? well according to the scientific types it could be both. the claim is that they've about established a new breed in the eastern u.s. and canada and that may be the reason more people are bein' attacked as the wolf part ain't as scared of humans and the combination of the two with possibly a bit of dog in the mix is more aggressive. for what it's worth, bubba.

I think it is a Hybrid.  Body looks like a big Coyote.  Ears say coyote, but head says wolf.  National Geographic had an article on Coyotes, and Hybrids a couple of years back.  Tennessee and Kentucky have known for decades that the Coyote and Red Wolves have been crossing.  Yotes and dogs are also crossing.

Shootall:  Your behind the times, I shot coyotes in Eastern Virginia and Maryland back in the early 90s, when living there.  You,ve had Coyotes for a long time, just the state has refused to admit it.  In 1992 I would see a coyote in my back yard several times a week.  I told the guys at work, and they laughed at me.  They said I did not know the differance between a grayfox and a coyote.  I set out snares in the hedges around the back yard.  It took a few weeks but I finally caught the coyote.  I threw it in the back of my pick-up and took it into work.  Those boys quite laughing, they had to eat crow.  At the time I lived inside the Beltway.  Right beside the Potomac.

Coyotes moved into middle Tennessee over 40 years ago.  My Uncle had been a Fox Hunter, (where they go out and let the hounds chase a fox all night, but never catch it).  He hated it because the Coyotes killed the foxes off.  Tried to convince him to chase the Coyotes with his hounds, but he never would.

Shootall:  Get a good light that has a red filter or lens.  Not a super bright one, but one you can see eyes out to 80 yards.  A good Turkey shotgun, and heavy Turkey loads.  Setup with your back to a structure if possiable so they can not get behind you.  Then call with a squeeling rabbit call.  Face down wind, they will try and circle downwind to get your scent.  When you see their eyes glowing in the red light, and you can tell it's a Coyote, take your shot.  If you have more than one come in try and take them all.  A missed Coyote is an educated Coyote.

My partner and I will sit facing opposite directions often.

Last spring we went out hunting early before sunrise.  As it got light we could not use the lights, but it was still hard to see clearly.  I bought one of those cat toys last spring.  One that spins a feather or fake mouse on a stick.  I set it up out in front of us.  I was calling, my partner Norm was sitting watching.  With a swamp behind us we were both facing the same direction.  A pair of Coyotes had started in but hung up about 80 yards out.  Norm was so intently trained on those two he failed to notice the one sneaking up from the side.  I had the decoy set on intermintent.  I squeeled the call, and at that time the decoy started spinning and shaking.  The Coyote leaped for the decoy, using Norms leg as a springboard.  Norm screamed, threw his shotgun up into the air, and threw himself over backwards.  While screaming a lot of unprintable words.  That alone made the night.  I'll never forget that sceen as long as I live.  Oh, and the offending Coyote got away.  Not sure who was surprised the most, the Coyote or Norm.

Sourdough, my brother got a surprise like that a couple years ago turkey hunting.  A bobcat actually took the cap off his head as it went for his decoy.  He managed to pull together and shoot the cat, but about had to change his drawers.

That picture looks dead on like the Red wolves here in NC. And just for the record, anybody who thinks there are only 300 of them left in the world is smoking something. They never left the Great Smokies Park area. They've reintroduced them in Manteo and added to the Smokies, but they were there before the addition.
