oops...
« on: November 17, 2011, 03:23:20 AM »
had a customer last night bring this Handi rifle back. crappy pics and i apologize for that but all i had was my phone camera...
customer said he had taken it to the range to sight it in and couldnt get it on paper. then he had the man at the indoor range re-boresight it and try to sight it in as well. after a few shots they realised what the problem was so he brought it in... :o

we are gonna exchange it for him and send it back to H&R...

whats wrong with this picture?
the marking on the barrel reads:
caliber .444 marlin

here is the muzzle of the same rifle... :o

not bashing cause i know mistakes happen and i can live with that, just sharing with yall...

0.500"-ish

It is chambered for the 444 marlin as marked on the barrel but the bore is definately NOT for a 44 caliber.

Wow. At least the bore is bigger than .44 and not a lot smaller!

We used to joke in the shop about the inconsistency of Italian vehicles build quality by saying that you didnt want a Mon., Wed., or Fri. made one, or those made right after lunch anyday.
Mon. was getting over the weekend, Wed. was after two days work, and Fri. for the obvious. After lunch we will leave to the imagination.
Tues. and Thur. were gems if not made right after lunch or too close to closing.

As per my handle I own two Moto Guzzi motorcycles which are Italian made. Overall they are great bikes but the above has applied to the Guzzi factory at times, especially in the 80s and some of the 90s. That not only goes for the production line but engineering too.

Are H&R barrels rifled with a button die? Chambered 444 how could they drag a 500 button die through it?

I would figure they start like as a tube of a certain bore that is rifled then reamed depending on the caliber. Like same "blank" for 44 and 444 marlin? Someone just grabbed the 50 cal blank and reamed a 444 chamber into it... I guess?

Got any .50 cal muzzleloader roundballs?  If a bit too small just squish in a vise a bit to upsize and plastic or wood hammer in.

Joe,

Ignoring the rim on a 444M brass the largest OD is around 0.470" so they couldn't cut a 444M chamber in .500" barrel blank.  Maybe the bore is opening up as you near the muzzle?

Sounds like the bore is messed up near the muzzle, a 444 round should drop into the muzzle clear to the rim, maybe they ran the muzzle recessing tool a little too deep and left a poor crown.

If that's the case then making it a shorty may fix it. ??

Best I could offer is I dropped a 45cal lead muzzle loader ball down the bore and it slid right thru. 50 cal ball wouldn't fit
