Brass Shotshells and Smokeless?
« on: November 17, 2011, 12:27:43 PM »
Anyone know of a brand of Brass Shotshell that's acceptable for smokeless, other than perhaps Rocky Mountain?

Magtech seems to be for black powder, Rocky Mountain comes in at $5.00 a hull. (Perhaps not over priced if they have a long enough service life.)

Few reviews I've seen said you'll be giving them to your grandchildren with moderate care.  ;)  I'll see if I can find a review of the Rocky.  I know a few loading light smokeless loads in the magtech too.  ;)

Just for everyone's reference, here's what Dave had to say about his cases over at Rocky Mountain, haven't written Magtech yet.

Just out of curiousity, is my impression that one could dispense with cushion wads with these accurate? Somewhere in my research I thought I read of a load stack that goes, powder, two card wads, shot, card wad. Would leave some space at the end, no doubt, but heck a Que-tip will let me seal it.  The less components I can get a good load with, the better, no?

Here's Dave:

"The cases I manufacture have the gauge bore dia as an inside dia on the case. this allows standard gauge wad combinations to be used, they are made to use the standard 209 shot shell primer, and can be loaded with any safe published load data  as well as black powder loadings.and I do make cases for gauge rifle loadings as well.

The cases work best with single and double barreled shot guns .  A magazine type fire arm will in most instances, require a shorter case due to the magazine cut off  like a folded crimp plastic or paper case would be. This requires a special dia of the case mouth due to the taper of the chamber. The cases are muck heavier in weight so do not function well with Autos. hope this helps, Dave Casey"

The RMC cases are worth the $ (10  for $65). The comment about leaving them to you grandkids is quite apt. They are wonderfully well made. I have another set on order. Any standard load for a straight-walled hull will work just fine. You seal the shot in with an OS card and Duco cement.
I have used Magtech/CBC cases with smokeless as well for light Trap loads. They require a traditional wad column as modern 12 gauge wads are too  small for the drawn brass CBC hulls. The RMC cases are lathe turned.
About dispensing with the traditional wad column in Magtech/CBC loads:  Maybe so. It is a common practice for MLing shotgunners to  use only OS cards - five over the powder, then shot, seal with a sixth OS card. The grand old man of MLing shotgunning, V.M. Starr, used just a single cardboard wad and was very successful.
Loads using the CBC cases do not pattern quite as well as similar loads in the RMC cases.
