Leaving the USH at home

Well heck. Pulled the 12ga USH out yesterday and shot it at 50 yrds to check it before leaving this morning. First shot was left 1" the second was mostly in the same hole so I gave it a few clicks to tweakit. I dropped the hammer click, dropped the hammer again click. Checked the round and the primer was barely dented. Checked two more rounds same thing. I opened the action and snapped the hammer. The pin barely cleared the receiver. Either a weak spring or broke pin. The firing pin could be crudded it up but it has been cleaned and only had 20 rounds fired thru it total.  Was planning on it it being my weapon in the morning. Back to the .45-70 I guess.

Form the sound of it, its worked perfectly for all prev rounds... Meaning something changed.... Pull it appart and clean it up see what you find.
 
Weak main springs are a problem thats been an issue for more then 10 years... Crudded up firing pin is another issue thats possible. If you find this, think hard about storing them muzzle down. It ain't a purdy I know, but it stops such problems COLD!

IIRC, we have had a number of USHs here with T-bar issues, they seem to have fallen into that production time frame of the 'too low striker' batch that they tried. My experience with that style was pretty much that it worked until it didnt and iffy thereafter until not at all. Not to say that it cant be anything else, but nowdays that is my first check when one exhibits this syndrome.

If it is a tranfer bar what is the fix to cure it.

Maybe too slow on the trigger pull so the transfer bar doesn't get lifted in time for the hammer to strike it?  I seem to remember seeing something about that earlier.

Sometimes paying attention to trigger pull, especially the follow through, helps, but it is NO replacement for proper functioning lockworks.

Ive been pulling triggers on these H&R/ New England Arms for 45 years it would be the first time a slow steady trigger pull was bad on one. Calling them today for some answers.

My USH is regulated to the bench, too many FTF's. I like the gun and use it alot to test handloads but would never hunt with it. I noticed when using clean burn powders I don't have much trouble. When using slow burn dirty powders like Blue Dot and RL17 I start to get FTF's. I discovered that spraying Kroil Areo into the firing pin hole that it starts working again as it should.

I respectfully submit you have something else going on there other than the powders and that it can be as reliable as anything else.

  H&R advised that the problem is the redesigned transfer bar used when my gun was manufactured two years ago. They are offering to repair it free of charge.  I have always had excellent customer service from H&R/ New England firearms.

IMHO it cant be done in good conscience, nor advised. Fact is it is just easier and better to put in the proper 'new' T-bar and be done with it.
