Having owned them and shot them with Uncle Sam, I have no use for anything based on the M-16 or any other semi-auto.  I'd rather have a single shot.

Uh.......I don't care!

Just pointing out that a jamomatic can't be a Scout Rife.  A 5.56 can't be a Scout Rifle.  The Styer is pretty much it unless you build it yourself.

I to like the 94 , I didn't care for the AR for many years , It was the round more than the gun. Now with the 6.8spc I have a new "LIKE" .

The 7.62 x 39 and the 6.8 mm Remington SPC (or 6.8×43mm) are ballistically fairly close to eachother, though the 6.8 has a slight edge over the 7.62 Russian; of the two the 7.62 X 39 is  just so much cheaper to shoot.

The American 6.8 may be better then the 7.62 Russian round but considering the scout concept to be a survival gun I would rather go with the better availability of the 7.62 x 39 ammo ( just my 2 cents )

Well SHOOTALL...I've read your posts and respected your opinions and ideas for a long time now. But with this post you've completely lost me. Your argument supporting the 6.8mm Remington vs the 7.62 x 39 is totally based on a political bias against a country that doesn't even exist anymore. We won the cold war. And that is a fact that has absolutely nothing to do with the merits and realities of either the 6.8 mmm or the 7.62 x 39.

I'm  guessing that this is just a situation where I don't understand your unique sense of humor.  :o

I guess one would have to quit buyin foreign made guns with that analogy. Where would the Browning folks be, or the Rossi, or Uberti fans. I say shoot what you have, and buy what you can afford.

If you want a survival gun, both would be poor choices.

Correct it was a joke , since more and more American gun co's are building guns to shoot Russian surplus. I have been looking at that S&W upper that shoots the Russian 22cal. service round. Hey Hornady now loads steel cased ammo. In some respects the Russians experinced money problems long before us  so maybe their track record in small arms is our future . Sorry if I confused ya , poor expression on my part.

All that clear now , I have shot more guns that shoot 7.62X39 than 6.8spc. All including the Rugers were accurate enough to hunt with . The 6.8 spc I have is very accurate , maybe more so than the 7.62X39 ( in the rifles I have shot this is very true but not a fair test as the 6.8 was a AR while the others were Mini-30's and SKS .) .The 7.62 needs to match bbl deminsions to bullet and the 6.8 has less bullets aval for now. I hunt with my 6.8 so ammo is hunting ammo not FMJ. I would guess a 7.62X39 in an AR would be accurate also. ( yet to shoot one ).
I will stick my neck out and say a deer would not know the difference .
If ya can see it ya can hit it !

Singleshotsam suggested above that an sks would be an ideal scout rifle, if used with a forward mounted optic.  I don't own an sks, but it always appeared to me that the big problem was the lack of quality, reliable scope mounts for them, plus the big-thumb front sight sitting out there.

So, who makes a totally realiable, rugged, forward mounting scope base and rings for an sks?  Seems to me that if somebody does make one, you could just go to an optic and remove the front sight.

Like a mod 94 the SKS shoots a round better used in non scoped rifles when invented . The new glass changes that the 94 wenr AE the SKS was an antique at that point in the eyes of many and little has been done to add a scope until the side mount was introduced . You might find it on Red Jackets site they do alot with stuff such as that. As a side note I have shot both Russian and guns from China . Also mini 30's and so far the China guns were more accurate.

Any rifle a SCOUT carries is a scout rifle . Springfield makes a M1-A SCOUT rifle . They carry more CLOUT than you on these matters IMHO !

They make an M1-A they call a Scout but it doesn't meet the definition of a Scout Rifle.  It isn't even close.

It dosen't ? lets see forward mounted sighting rail. Can be reloaded with a stripper clip. Short bbl. Retains iron sights. Can be reloaded with a mag change. etc. Its very rugged.

Springfield Armory, Inc., offers three semiautomatic rifles that, while significantly overweight (and thus are at best Pseudo Scouts), are chambered for .308 Win., utilize short barrels, and have forward scope mounts. These are the Scout Squad, the SOCOM 16, and the SOCOM II variants of the M1A rifle.[14] Of the three, the SOCOM 16 probably comes the closest to a true Scout since it is only 37.25" long, features a ghost ring rear sight, and weighs the least (9.3 lbs).[15]

Yes I agree with that. But things change so I feel the Col's definition can/has been improved on. Back in the 70's when he was comming up with his definition there was less choice .

I'll agree with that...My Chinese SKS is more accurate than my Dad's or my Brother's Romanian made SKS's...and its way more accurate than either of my WASR AK's.

Not true. If it could make length and weight it would qualify. Trouble is, with current technology it cqn't make weight.

Why are we debating whether a semi auto can be a scout rifle?  Thousands of them are used by real military scouts everyday.  Hell even snipers are moving to semi-auto.

I guess if we are going to be tied to the definition of some dead guy writing 40 years ago you all are probably right, but the world has gone around many times since then.
