Re bore to 375 Winchester

Just mullin over a few ideas.  What is the best barrel to use for a rebore to 375 Winchester?  I have a 30-30 and a 223 at my disposal.  What does it cost?

The 223 is fitted to a 1991 frame that came with a 45-70, so I would have to fit it to one of my SB2 frames, something I have not tried yet so I am not sure how successful I would be.

I checked the 4 or 5 rebore outfits I could find on the internet and $300 to $350 seems to be the going rate.
I wanted to go from 243 to 260 Remington, so no change in extractor etc.
That should work with your 30-30 to .375.


I decided to go with a stub and see if a Shilen barrel will shoot hot on a Handi.
I may do both. In fact I may add 30-30 to .375 rebore to the list and quit waiting around for a 38-55

Has anyone done a 30-30 to .375?
I was just looking at a 30-30 barrel and wondering if there is enough metal to rebore to .375?

I always compare chambers here- http://stevespages.com/page8d.htm  30-30 to .375 Win is a tight call, too tight for me to make.

If there's enough difference for a .243" to .264", the 30-30 can go to .375" easily! I've checked with a gunsmith that does rebores, his minimum muzzle diameter for a .375" barrel is .550" even a Superlight barrel fits that criteria.

Not enough difference to worry about most likely, 30-30 brass can be used in the 375 Win and 375 Win brass works fine in a 30-30, albeit neck turning may be necessary due to the thickness. The SAAMI spec for the 30-30 is .4213" at the case head, .4198" ....correction, it's .4213" also for the 375 Win (I looked at the cartridge instead of chamber spec in the SAAMI manual! ::)),  probably depends more on the original chamber and the reamer specs, extremes at both ends may be a problem.

I have a 375 Winchester that Wayne York did.   It is from a current production profiled barrel but I don't know what the original barrel was chambered for.

Guys, thanks for the info.  I was a bit concerned about using the 30-30, not for barrel profile reasons, but was concerned about chamber clearances.  Good to know that wont be a problem. 

I do these little thought experiments from time to time.  Sometimes I am way to analytical and take forever to make a decision.  I have always liked the 375 Winchester, but have never owned or shot one.  In looking around, a rebore my be the cheapest route.  Heck, its almost the only route to owning one.

By planting your thought in my head, you probably cost me the price of a 30-30 barrel and a rebore. (Not to mention brass, bullets, dies, etc)

You are feeding a Handiholic's habit  >:( . Oh well, my wife will get over not getting anything for Christmas. I NEED a 38-55, or a 375win, or 357 Herrett. Looks like I need to get to the classifieds, I need more barrels. :'(   ;)
