Good Encore muzzleloader cleaning regiment.
« on: November 19, 2011, 04:03:06 AM »
I am just starting to shoot my Encore more, I usually shoot my more traditional rifles and have a pat cleaning regiment and favorite products for them. What specific cleaning regiment and products are you more experienced guys using on the Encore?  I shoot both Triple Seven and blackpowder with Powerbelt bullets. Also what is your experience with shooting lead conicals ?
Thanks,
Tony

For a number of years now my 50 X 209 Encore sees nothing but 777 and Precision Rifle bullets...also use Cecil Epps's custom breech plug with 25ACP brass and CCI magnum small rifle primers 8) .  I clean with nothing but alcohol and lube with Ballistol.  When time allows(which is almost always) I use a spit patch between shots.  I honestly don't know how many shots I could go with out cleaning the bore, but, it is a relatively high number for a front stuff'er.  During the season I clean the bore at the end of the day(most of the time) if I fired the rifle that day, but don't feel the absolute necessity of doing so, as in the old days.  BTW my barrel is blue...not SS.  Of course at the end of the season all is dismantled cleaned and lubed thoroughly.  It keeps this 'ol man happy ;D 8) ;D .

Thanks  Hopalong, I do have some of the 209 size brass adapters that take a small rifle primer and will give them a try, I do get that crud ring often spoken of when shooting 777 and will see if they help.

I shoot 120 grains of  Black horn 209 powder and 250 grain shock wave bullets with CCI 209 primers. I can shoot numerous times without running a patch down the barrel or doing anything else. After shooting numerous times I clean the breach plug and run a couple patches down the barrel and load up again ready to go. I hunted the two weeks of muzzle loading and checked the rifle before the start of the season and probably have cleaned the barrel a total of four times. It was shot to check sight in and shot to kill two deer and one of the cleanups was to unload it and put it up until late season. When using Black horn powder I am more concerned about the breach plug than the barrel. I used to shoot 777 powder and it shot well but I will never go back to it as long as Blackhorn is available. Cleanup with hoppes #9 and your set to go. less cleaning and more shooting. what is not to like about that??? Of course this is my opinion. Your mileage may vary!
