I had my C5 taken out last year. This year I'm waiting on getting the word on what the Dr is going to do with my C6, C7, and C8. I have extreme pain down both arms and my neck and shoulders. I can't take recoil from rifles or shotguns anymore and Dr says to think about a "softer" recoiling hobby. Which is ok with me, I'm a wuss on rifle recoil anyways.

So, for my birthday and Chrismas, my lovely new bride is going to buy me a rifle! Back story.....I had to sell and give away and hand over the majority of my material things due to my divorce. And now I'm on a great little hobby farm and living with someone who actually wants me to get into shooting again! So we scouted the farm for a decent shooting range set up and fond a great place that the neighbor and I have set up for some simple clay shooting and a safe place for shooting 22lrs. And after watching Quigley Down Under last night and over hearing me saying I always wanted a Sharps, wife wants me to get one!

Now, I won't take a shot over 150 yards here at the farm, but the gun club has a 300 range. And here on the farm It will be used to take out the rogue coydog or coon out to maybe 80 yards. Yea, a long range big bore is over kill, but I want one!

So, I'm not going to get a Sharps, but I always wanted a NEF in 45/70. I like the BC, but I think I will need a recoil pad. Now, I'm limited to Trapdoor loads due to the shoulder. I could just get a Handi with the 22" barrel. I like using the open sights, especially at these ranges. But I was REALLY liking the 32" barrel and then getting the sights on it as I want, and I love the wood and finish on the BC.

And this is what I'm thinking of doing, getting the BC and just get a recoil pad for it. Or get a Handi, with a 22" barrel, in 45/70 or 30/30 and then sending it in for the 32" barrel. Or just keep the 22" barrel and set it p with a peep or Marbles sight.

Am I on the right track? I'm open to other suggestions.

Have you considered the carbine in 45 colt ? I've just bought one and I'm waiting on it to arrive.
I'm in Australia and they're scarce out here. I managed to find one, new in the box but made in 2007 @ $495.
I imagine they would be much cheaper in the States.

Jon, there's still a few BC Carbines to be had here in the States for at least 200 less than you had to pay. I love mine, and if I had to pay 495 for it, I'd still do it. That said, it brings us back to the universal answer here...GET BOTH. The carbine is a lot Handier than the 32 inch .45-70, light on recoil and will easily dust the critters you mentioned at the ranges you expect. You could also ream it to .454 or .460. The big guy would be a lot of fun on the 300 yard range. I had BC Carbine stock sets on my .38-55 and .45LC and the metal butt plates got wearisome with prolonged shooting of heavy loads. I replaced the butt stocks with checkered walnut, pistol grip stocks with the factory recoil pad. End of problem. I can enjoy shooting all day in a tee shirt. (if it ever gets that warm around here

Drifting here, but curious. If the shoulder and back shouldn't take recoil, could you become a handgun hunter?
im not one, but it seems like the recoil would be absorbed by your arms.

Handgun hunting is another option. I can handle a pretty heavy recoil, like you said, with my arms. But its expensive as hell! I like single shots and those G2s are expensive.

I'm going to see if I can get a pretty stock set and get the 45/70 and 45LC 22" barrels.

IF you reload, then Trail Boss can calm down the kick of the 45-70. Trail Boss and a 405 grain lead slug in a 45-70 can put you into the 1200 FPS range which will be fine for your intended usage. Good luck rebuilding your gun collection.

Lefty. I think Quick (the moderator) has a buffalo classic he had the stock cut flat on and a recoil pad mounted to. If it wasn't him I think when he sees this post he'll know who it was. You can also get a straight walnut stick from Gunstocks, Inc. (one of the site's sponsors) that has a flat end for a recoil pad. As for hunting, a 405 grain lead round nose at 1300 fps will dump a whitetail inside 150 yards. And the recoil is about the less than a 410 shotgun to me.

? I'm thinkin maybe you'd be better off on the farm with a .22 Mag.,.22Hornet,.222Rem,.223Rem,.243Win, maybe a 7mm-08... Just my 2 bits.... good luck on the relationship ! "PJ"

Although the open sights would not be on a 7-08 you could have them added (by a smith) and add a BC type stock set with a recoil pad it would look just like a 45-70 bc just not as heavy on the shoulder. But with Trailboss I must agree the 405 gr don't kick too bad, but there was a HUGE debate over deer hunting with a trailboss load...And we don't really want to start that again.
The 30-30 can be very pleasant with 130 gr (deer) or 110 gr (coyote and such)spire points And mine does not have a recoil pad either, so a BC stock on a 30-30 could be very cool looking and user friendly.
The only place I have seen any 45 LC BCs available was BUDS gunshop online, they were no steal by any means but very very cool looking.
Sorry to hear about the back, If I had to choose a gun that may or may not hurt me for real, I would go light and just make it look like a BC. You can dress it any way you want once you have it. But the big dog loads on a 45-70 if you would shoot them could tend to hurt.
Hope the back holds up and you get to build what ever rifle you decide on. They all can be fun, I just don't like huge recoil no matter what caliber.

my buffalo classic with trail boss and 405/300 grain bullets are nice to shoot. i have about 3 pounds of lead in the stock also. 100/150 yards is good to go just have to be be were of the range because of the low velocity

Thanks PJ, and I do have a .22lr and an old Topper 16ga in the barn for vermin. And most of those calibers or too flat shooting for my hilly and brushy area. I like the big old lead throwers.

I was thinking the same thing. I wouldn't think twice of using the 357 MAG,(or a 44 MAG) but the expense of adding sights might not be a wise idea. But I could throw a 2x scope on it. And ream it out to a MAX (or the 44 MAG to a 445 SuperMag)! And it would look good on a Topper Deluxe Classic frame.

I love my .45LC Classic Carbine. I use a low end load of Reloader7 and a 300 gr. XTP Magnum and it barely even kicks. It shoots all the regular .45 colt loads no issue either with slight change in POI of course. Before next hunting season I do intend to have a Skinner Peep on it though.

I like that 45LC carbine! And after a search, I really like those 357/44 carbines also. Think I'm getting sold on the pistol caliber carbines.

One of our esteemed GBO members, Canon6, has shoulder problems too. He would have a valued opinion about this subject and would be the first person I would ask.

What I have read from him indicates that a 30-30 or .357 Mag might be your best options. The 45-70 TB load that I shoot is light recoiling and quite accurate. However, I did have to hold-over roughly 6 ft to hit a 18" gong at 200yds. Weight can be added to the stock and a good pad installed to lessen the recoil. Just don't fall into the trap of loading more and more to find the point of pain. BTW, stay away from the 535gr Postell bullets. I shot some today and they reminded me of shooting a 12ga slug gun. If it weren't for the recoil padded shooting jacket I was wearing, I wouldn't have had any fun at all. $:-\$

I think for the actual hunting and vermin control ranges I will be more than happy with the 357/44 mags or the 30/30. Plus the 357/44 barrels would look great on the Topper Deluxe Classic I want. Might not be able to shoot the 12ga barrel, but it will serve well for the pistol calibers and has the nice wood, drop stock, and recoil pad already.

Talked to my gunsmith/gun shop ownerand he is going to start the look for the Deluxe Classic (which seems to be as rare as hen's teeth) or a Talo Trapper for me.

As usual Dinny is as the Brit's say" spot on", I have gone thru all of the calibers and have settled on the 357/357 Maxi.I like to shoot and the ability to shoot a lot of 357 mag,38 Special is a big selling point. I found one the Talo Specials on a auction site,it comes with iron sights and of course is drilled and tapped.It comes with a recoil pad, but I changed mine out for a Limbsaver. lefty_ red , I have a lot of load info .If you need it send me a PM. hth, Doug
