Yuma, CO Pheasant Hunt 2011
« on: November 20, 2011, 01:22:46 PM »
Got a call from my cousins late Wednesday evening to come out and go hunting in Yuma. Due to the very short notice of this invitation, I put together a small group for the hunt, consisting mostly of the regular Dove Hunters that go with us each year. My son has Mono, so was not able to go with us this time. But my Dad decided to come along on the hunt and my daughter broke out her 12 gauge 870 to round out the new additions to the hunting group. The seven of us made the pilgrimage yesterday (Saturday), leaving home at 4:30 am, hunting all day, and getting home at 6:00 pm. Lot's of fun but not many birds. Even though the pickings were slim, we did manage to harvest 8 pheasants. And as I sit here typing this, I'm smelling the sweet aroma of those wonderful birds cooking in the crockpot. (Dinner is in an hour and everyone is coming over to share tales of this hunt and past hunts as well... 8) )

Most of the birds were taken in fields with center-pivot corn crops and thick weeds or stands of cedar tree in the corners. In a few weeks we'll head back for another hunt. I think that as winter sets in and hunting pressure gives way to other activities, the birds will begin to congrate in significant numbers in the corn fields and edge rows. Right now the birds were pretty scattered from the opening being last weekend and the goodly numbers of hunt groups hitting the feilds again yesterday.

So for now we'll enjoy a great dinner of upland game and the re-telling of the hunt.  8)

As usual...I took the camera but did not remember to take pictures.  ???

Pheasant Recipe

4 skinned whole pheasants
1 1/3 cups water
2 cans Cream of Chicken or Cream of Celery Soup
2 table spoons chopped garlic (I like Garlic...so you may want to go with 2 teaspoons)
1 med. chopped onion
2 cups chopped celery
1 1/2 large cubed potatos
5 cut carrots
Salt & Pepper to taste

In the crock pot place the 4 skinned pheasants and pour the water over the top. Next add the garlic and then pour the canned soup ove the top. We did two crock pots of Pheasants, so there was one crock pot wth Cream of Celery as the soup and the other was Cream of Chicken. Thean add the onions, celery and potatos ove the top and cook for 6 to 7 hours.

Once the cooking is completed, remove the whole skinned pheasants and place on platters to be served. The remaining contents of the crock pot (vegetables and soup) is stirred thoroughly and will form a nice gravy. The pheasant is then served on a bed of wild rice and the gravy was then laddled over the top. With dinner we had a nice dinner salad.

I have never had pheasant prepared like this before, it was a recipe that was suggested by one of the memberrs of our group. Its a simple recipe, and the results were very well recieved. We'll be heading back for another hunt later this year and having another Hunters Feast.

Enjoy.  8)

Rock, I assume you were hunting on private land?

Have you heard of any bird hunting on the California side of the river, either on public land, Indian land, or on a private pay-to-hunt basis?

I live over on the coast and Yuma is about as close to me as the CA San Joaquin Valley where I hunt now.

Hey Mike,

You are correct, we were hunting about 5000 acres of private land. But we're not anywhere near California. We're hunting Yuma Colorado...not Yuma Arizona.

Sorry for the confusion. I'll change the heading of the thread to better clarify where it was that we hunted.  ???

Thanks for the clarification!  I must confess I didn't even know there WAS a Yuma, CO.  Kinda a long drive for me to get phez...I'd probably just keep going to Western Kansas!
