O.K. to Dry fire?????

I pulled the trigger on a Pietta 1858 New Army and it is a hoot to shoot!  Question... is it bad to dry fire without a percussion cap?  I noticed on the hammer a circular "peen" mark.  I may have dry fired a few times.  Does this peening occur under normal firing?

 :( Dry firing is a BIG no,no.You stand a good chance of de-forming the nipples.If you must dry fire,at least
     put percussion caps on the nipples.Lee

Used ones. Seems like a saw "snap cap" primers at OutDoor World where they had hard rubber faces for trigger practice. Like regular snap caps.

Yep, if dry firing put a cap on the nipples so there is a resistance at hammer impact Just the hammer hitting the nipples will batter them, causing them to mushroom and become candidates for replacement.

Better yet just remove the nipples. If a cap & ball revolver is properly set up the hammer will bottom out a few thousandths short of touching the empty nipple but not many are really set up properly.
