Finally, collet-crimp dies for revolver ctg.s!
« on: November 22, 2011, 02:36:26 AM »
 Hey Veral,
I thought I should post this on your forum.
The guy who runs Ranch Dog Outdoors
(www.RanchDogOutdoors.com) has coaxed Lee to custom-make [for him] crimp dies for revolver cartridges wherein the crimp is made by a collet-squeeze actuated from below just like Lee's Factory Crimp for rifle cartridges.
The collet is pushed closed by the shell-holder/ram as the cartridge is raised/inserted all the way in.
The crimp is made in a collet-closing motion, upward from below...no more buckling the case because of the downward/rearward motion of the crimp!
I have used this "Factory Crimp" on the 45/70 and others and judge it as superb.
It'll make a crimp whether there is a crimp-groove or not!
Absolutely the best concept I've ever seen or heard of for applying a crimp. Even beats Redding's "Profile Crimp" which makes a roll-crimp at the end of a taper-crimp, (pretty good and better than Lee's but it'll buckle the case farther down if a hard crimp is attempted.)
I always wondered why Lee didn't make them for this class of cartridge.
Now that Ranch Dog is selling them I wonder if/when Lee will come out with them. (You know how the good folks at Lee are.)
Anyway, Ranch Dog currently has these for sale in 357 Mag, 41 Mag, 44 Mag and 45 Colt, for $20 each. This is as good as crimp dies can get!
Ranch Dog, told me he'd get them made for the 454 too if he got a few more requests.
hint hint
I'd like to see them available for all the big-bore high-power cartridges, specifically the 475-L and such.

Aside: Ranch Dog expressed interest in developing tooling for the 475 Linebaugh and/or 480 Ruger cartridges. He needs to be  encouraged on this subject, guys.

The guys that shoot the big guns need to inquire to Ranch Dog about these crimp dies for their bigger cartridges so he can be reasonably sure of getting his investment back if he goes to the trouble to offer them. Lee requires that he buy them in lots of 100 or more, for each specific cartridge.
I think we should beat the drum for these collet-crimp dies!
Maybe we can eventually see them available for all the big-bore
high-powered cartridges.
What say you?
"Stop global whining!"

These dies will allow untrimmed brass of varying length to  produce uniform velocities, and also allow crimping where there is no crimp groove, with jacketed or cast.    Whether they provide as much bullet pull as normal crimps, I don't know, but I presume it will and for sure it will be close, with NO ROOM FOR ERROR!   By that I mean.  If one is loading brass of varying length in standard loading dies, a long case will buckle/swell slightly when the crimp hits the bottom of the  groove.  If a case swells at all it will lose most of it's bullet grip.  If one tries to get all the crimp grip possible by bumping the crimp too hard, the same problem arrises on every round.  The lee factory crimp of this design will solve all that.

By contrast the Lee Factory crimp pistol dies have a sizer ring  which, if it sizes the cases, which it is designed to do, over a cast bullet which is intentionally oversize, you'll be able to spin the bullet in the case with your fingers.  Also, the crimp station in these dies is the same as all standard dies.  Lee pistol factory crimp dies are trouble waiting to happen.  Don't use them.

But these new dies would be an excellent die to have on anyones bench, one for each caliber.  An inexpensive investment which can solve loading problems that can't be solved any other way.
