A trio of Seacoast Defenders
« on: November 22, 2011, 12:25:24 PM »
I recently completed these.  The krupp is now up sized to 36 caliber.  I still have to practice welding the 1/8" diameter round for the ladder rungs.  Nano welding is tricky.   I'm also starting to work on the list of Dictator mortars I have to build.  Dom

The rear platform of the Krupp Barbette is removable when firing for full recoil.  The mortar is 75 caliber.

Hi Dom, Will my platform for the .75 Dahlgrenlook like that one?  Very, very nice.  If I had the money, THAT"S the carriage I'd put the Parrott on.

All three of your seacoast defenders are especially nice, Dom.  I sure wish I had the Powerball winnings that I am counting on for my retirement right now!  When I do and I mean when not if, I will be ordering a bunch of them for three dioramas that I have planned.  I will need 2 of the 11" Dahlgren Shell Guns for a White Point Garden Battery replicating what the Confederates had at the tip of the Charleston Penninsula after they recovered the naval battery off the Federal ship Keokuk which they sank on 8 April 1863.

Next, I will need 10 of those beautiful 13" Seacoast Mortars M1861 to re-create the Union's powerful Battery No. 4, on Wormley Creek near Yorktown.  In 1861 this battery was ready to fire the entire town in Virginia, but the crafty rebels withdrew quietly the night of 5 May 1862 before the bombardment was to commence.  Famous pics exist of this battery, 3 guns in one and 7 in another.

Last, but not least, I will need about 20 of the 1866, 14", Krupp Seacoast Howitzers on that cool barbette chassis.  The diorama will be titled: "Franco-Prussian War July 1870 on the Northern German Coast - Waiting for the French Fleet"  Fortunately for the French, they never invaded the north coast!

If I win next week, do you think delivery of these by Christmas would be a problem?  You could squeeze these in, right?   ;) ;)

Tracy and Mike
Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!
