Anybody shoot a.45 cal ML on a G2 pistol?
« on: November 22, 2011, 03:12:55 PM »
Got a great deal on a Gonic  16in.45 cal muzzleloader barrell and was curious if any one has shot one of these.I just wanted to find a good starting load to play with. Here in Va you can't deer hunt with a ML pistol, but should be fun to shoot just the same.I picked this up for a $100 and plenty of powder and bullets to boot. Thanks

Those Gonic Arms pistol barrels are real shooters, buddy of mine has one and I have shot a couple of does with it, deadly accurate, for $100 you got a great deal. I use 155 grain Hornady xtp, harvester sabot and 80 grains of Blackhorn.

I have a TC 209-45 that I had cut to 14 inches and I mounted a scope on it and I use 225 powerbelt with a 50 grn T7 and it holds a good group at 65 yards, lots of fun to shoot. I could hunt with it and have taken it on a couple of hunts as a back up so to speak but have not had to us it. I am thinking of getting some loose powder and uping the load to 60 or 70 grns That may be about all the powder that will burn in a 14 inch barrel.

I recently picked up a 16" Gonic 209x45 too but haven't had a chance to take it the range yet. If the velocity is decent out of it I plan to do some short range deer hunting with it. I'll post back when I get a chance to shoot mine.
For $100 you should walk down to the station and turn yourself in 'cause you stole it :)

twohats,  I "almost" got a Gonic on several different occasions but never connected for some reason.  They are reputed to have a rather tight bore ??? , but no real experience here.  Muzzle loading handguns were legal for deer in The Old Dominion at one time but the wording in the rules was changed :(  and that ended that.  Several of us have tried, unsucessfully so far, to get it changed back like it was.  More letters to VDGIF with support would help.  I used to hunt with and made a good kill on a decent buck with a 12" .50 TC Scout.  It was very short range, but it dropped him right thar!!  A full bore Maxi-hunter w/ 90gr of Pyro did it's thing...kicks like a little mule, but a lot of fun.  BTW Where are you in VA...I'm just 2 hoots and a holler outside of Roanoke.

I finally got my Gonic 209x45 to the range this afternoon. It's awesome!!! I can tell this is going to be one of my favorite barrels. Unfortunately I didn't really have a chance to see what kind of accuracy I could squeeze out of it. Short on time and had an Encore ML that needed to be sighted in for this weekend.
I happened to stop at a gun shop on the way to the range that had 225 gr HP Powerbelts so I ended up just using those over BH 209. Next week I'll have a chance to shoot it again when I'm not pressed for time and maybe try some different bullets too.

Dogmann,  I did a quick google search and found no website, which was exactly what I expected but wasn't sure.  I do know the man who started and ran Gonic Arms died 5 +/- years ago, maybe more, and his son tried to take over and run things with meager results.  Didn't find anything on current status of the company.  There was a gun shop in New England that handled most of his sales and seemed to be pretty close.  Renaissance Arms, I think, is it's name.  They do have a web site, but a quick glance showed no mention of anything about Gonic, but a phone call there wouldn't hurt.  I also know that Cecil Epps at Precision Bullets at one time had sabots made expressly for the tight bored Gonic 50's.  A call there wouldn't hurt either as I find Cecil quite knowledgeable about all things muzzle loadable.
