Encore Newbie Question

Hey - I am about to become an Encore owner.  Have a pro hunter frame on the way and I picked up a 460 S&W barrel in a pretty good deal.  As a first timer, I do worry about all the Mike You-Know-Who warnings about Encore barrels having chambers cut off-center of the bore.  Has this really been that big a problem?   Or is this comment just an attempt to sell after-market barrels?  I have been wanting to try the 460 as a rifle cartridge.  Thanks for any replies.  Guns-o-Fun

That's his way of selling things - if he can convince you there is a need, he's half way to selling you a solution.  Worse yet, some of his solutions are down right dangerous.

I won't say things like that never happen, but I'd also say they are rare.  Get the barrel, shoot it, and if it performs (as it likely will), great!  If not, come back here with specifics about what you did and how it performed and likely as not the folks here will be able to help you tune things without spending a bunch on a supposed "solution".

I've shot Contender and encore barrels in a lot of chamberings and own quite a few different ones.  I haven't found any that have had any issues or heard of any except online and I think a lot of them are created by custom smiths.  They might be off a little but not where the average guy would ever realize.

Someone who badmouths T/C barrels while extolling the virtues of Bergara barrels has very little credibility with me.


I have had several dozen T/C barrels with very few problems none of which, as far as I know, had anything to do with the chambers being off center to the bore.


I take it you have a 460 S&W rifle barrel.  The 460 S&W was the hardest one of all for me to get a good load for.  Consider Hornady 250 gr. SST/ML bullets (muzzle loader bullets) over 2400.

Thanks.  Have to give those a try.  I am a Lil gun fan, though.  I suspected that a lot of this scuttelbutt was just a sales pitch.  Thanks for confirmation.

I have a herd of Thompson barrels in both Contender and Encore.  All shoot great with factory loads and even better with reloads.  Never saw a need to let anyone mess with them other than having my gunsmith put 3 pound triggers on all Five of my encore frames.

I have two Encores and have never had an issue.  Happy Shootin
