H&R 2007 in 308 with suppressor / silencer
« on: November 23, 2011, 07:25:00 PM »
First off, I'm down in New Zealand where this sort of thing is perfectly legal.  Some of us do a lot of mountainous walking to get into our hunting areas, so the idea was to create a pack rifle, and silencing it to protect my hearing just seemed sensible.  ;)

Anyhow, I thought I'd post this up here so anybody else interested can find an example of one completed:

From this

To This

OAL 90cm
Barrel Length after cut and threading, 36.5cm.
After removing the thumbscrew, the rifle breaks down to this:

A local gunsmith fitted a silencer into the forend, despite several other gunsmiths saying it couldn't be done because of the screw. The forend screw is a 'thumb screw' I picked up so that I can take the rifle apart without tools in the field.  Obviously I'm going to have to get the screw cut or else carrying the rifle over my shoulder is going to be a problem / pain in the shoulder!

Oh, also, I got the plastic stock from these guys - a Monte Carlo Stock

Or if ordering to export out of the USA, you need this link:

This rifle is NOT light.  I haven't weighed it, but it's certainly on the heavy side.
Later I'll get a wee canvas bag made for it so that I can be carried in pieces in my pack and shouldered as just a thin carry bag: good for walking.

Off the top of my head, rifle cost me $400NZ, silencer and fitting $500NZ and plastic stock around $100NZ after I got it shipped.

Incidently, would any of you guys know where I might be able to order a suitable thumb screw (the current one doesn't recess) that will allow shipping to NZ?

Cheers.  :)

Very cool man, thanks for sharing.  Guess the silencer thing is one nice thing about where you live.  They will now allow us to own one in MI, but you still cannot use it for hunting.  8(  I too would like it just because of the ear protection stuff.  Anyway, appreciate the pics.  I have been thinking about doing this with one of mine, but want to see how the new law works out here or that it doesn't get overturned etc.  lol

Lonewheel do you have to shoot subsonic ammo for the silencer to be effective?
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.
