I like 30 grains of IMR-4198 under a 405 grain hard cast or Remington 405 JSP.

Yes but I get higher velocity with the lead.

400Gr Speer with a near max load of 4198 for the Marlin. This loading gets me 2000fps and about 1"-1.25" 100 Yard groups.

400Gr Speer with a med loading of 4198 for the H&R. This loading gets me 1600 fps and 1" groups at 100 yards.

I'm shooting 50gr. of H4198 with a 300gr. Hornady hollowpoint. Very accurate out of my Handi but recoil is pretty stiff.

I have 2 loads I like , the 300gr Sierra with 55gr of H4198 and Beartooth hard cast 325gr, same amount of powder. Pretty decent load with wake up recoil but not bad in Marlin 1895 with recoil pad. Either load puts deer down in a heartbeat. 2200 fps velocities. For future use I'll stick with the Beartooth bullet, should work for most anything I'll come across.

I use the Hornady 350 grain round nose with 52 grains of reloader 7. It puts a wallop on them.

The accuracy load for the 1895 Marlin out of the Sierra 4th edition manual works really well on deer. 300 gr Sierra HP 49.6 IMR 4198 for right at 2050 fps. Got a buddy that uses this load and when he places one in the shoulder of a deer it is DRT.

I've found almost any recommended load shots well in my Marlin. I've settled on 50 gr of V130 with a 300 gr Hornady. With the 350 Hornady, I use 44.5 V130. H4895 has also worked well with both 300 gr and 405 gr bullets.

A light charge of IMR-4198 or Unique should work for you.  Here's 30 grains of IMR-4198 under a 405 grain cast bullet at 100 yards.  3 shots....

I reduced the recoil in mine significantly with 19 ounces of #4 lead shot in a nylon stocking in the bolt hole of the stock.

I shoot 410 gr cast lead, gas checked (Saeco 21AG from Western Bullet) over 54.5 grains of Varget. Out of my 32" BC it averaged 1750 fps. Recoil is moderate. However at the ranges your talking on whitetails even the 300 grain factory loads (Trapdoor loads-recoil like a .410) will do.

My favorite load in my Ruger #3 is a Nosler 300gr Partition with 55.5 gr's of IMR 3031.

27 gr of 2400 and a Rem 405 bullet won't rock you world to much. I have synthetic stocks on both of my Handi's and filled most of the butt with sand.

I use 25 gr of AA 5744 behind a 405 gr cast bullet in my Handi. Recoil is very manageable, velocity is around 1300 FPS or so.
What kind of distances do you typically shoot?

Where I hunt it is something around 25 yards from the ground blind. A bit more from a tree stand. 100 yards would be unusual.
Some of the guys hunt over Blue Berry fields and then it gets a lot further. Nobody from that bunch uses a 45-70.

Brasskeeper,

If you like the 330 grain JHP, it was based on the Lyman 457122 Gould bullet.  That mould is still available and when cast from a softer alloy (40/1) and loaded over blackpowder, it is a great combination!  If black powder doesn't trip your trigger, 5744, 3030, 4895 and a host of other smokeless numbers are available and can give you the same ballistics.  I use the Gould HP over black in my Trapdoor and have good success with it.

If you put led shot in the stock of a rifle to give weight which helps dampen recoil DO NOT PACK IT IN TIGHT. It needs to have some room to move. Lead shot will oxidize over time and the build up will swell up and if it is packed tight in the first place it will cause the stock to split. Seen it in many an old single shot shotgun. So give the shot some room to move.

I use the same load as GH1 in my Sharps. 25 grs AA XMP 5744 and a Lyman #457193 405 gr (out of wheel weights drops from my mold at 418 grs and .458 diameter so no sizing is needed) Fed. 215 primer and WW case average 1400 fps. Shoots super tight and will drill a hole through most anything less than a tank out to 200 yards or so and the recoil does not beat you up.  This duplicates the velocity of a load of 70gr volume FFG black powder with a waxed milk carton wad over the powder compressed about 10 thousands inch with the same bullet.

Hmm, I wonder if I'm getting the same velocity? I didn't chrony mine, I got that figure from Accurate. I also wonder if the fact that I'm using LeverEvolution brass ups the speed a little bit, seeing how it's .070" shorter.
Just for grins I loaded some with 30 gr of 5744, but I've yet to fire them.

27.0 grains IMR SR-4759 under a 300 grain cast has pretty mild recoil even in my 5.7 lb. G2 Carbine.

Saeco 21A gas checked over 53.5 gr of Varget. 1750 fps and mild recoil. I'd trust it from whitetails to elk out to any range you care to name that's likely to come up.

My latest experiment to get an accurate load found 35 gr of SR 4759 pushing the 300 gr Rem HP a useful combination. This is not a very mild load but certainly  isn't  wild.

I like and use 28.0 grains of 2400 behind a Hornady 350 grain RNFP. Very accurate and easy on the shoulder, but deadly on deer....<><....:)

Which is it? FN or RN.
Both need 1800 fps to expand according to the Hdy folks. Did you ever recover a bullet from a deer?

Its both! Its a rounded nosed flat point bullet. ::)

Its designed for use on smaller game for the 45Cal magnums. Its quite a stout bullet! IIRC its preformance range STARTS at 1900 fps!!
