.356 Win Handi Load Data Needed
« on: November 24, 2011, 03:19:44 PM »
I have a custom barreled .356 Win Handi rifle that will be delivered next week. The .356 Win is a caliber that doesn't have a huge following, therefore, load data isn't overly abundant. Also, having been  chambered mostly in lever guns, most data shows flat-point bullets while I'll be using pointy ones. I'll list the bullets I have along with several powders that I think are suitable. Please help me align them for the most accurate hunting loads. I'm also interested in other powder and bullet recommendations.

I would just crib data from its near twin, the 358Win at a 90% of starting loads safety margin.  Every powder except TAC (obviously) is well represented on the Hodgdon data site.

TAC is listed in the ramshot pdf for the 338Federal, so with a quick e-mail to customer service they should be able to steer you right.

As always, bullets depend on What and Where are you shooting...

Good Luck!

Ditto for the 358 load data.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Only Handi so far is a 375 JDJ.

I have not seen the 90% rule mentioned before, thanks. I'll give it a try.

Dinny,
On whitetails and Black Bears that 200g Hornady spitzer is a good choice. I have shot at least a couple dozen deer with this bullet from a 358 Win. Some of my most memorable bang flops. Its a favorite of mine for sure!

In my 307WIN, LOVES H335 has proven most accurate. 4320 and 4895 where two good ones in the 358.

Roger that on reducing 358 data then working back up. the 356 case has a bit less capacity.

This is a excellent cartridge for the H&R and something I would definitely do If I had a "need".. PLEASE keep us updated with how it works for you Dinny!!

CW,
I think this rifle is destined to become one of my all-time favorites. A nice 20" medium-weight barrel with a muzzle diameter of .850" will make it (a) Super Handi!! ;D

Thanks, Dinny

Any factory .357 Mag barrel can be rechambered to .356 or .358 Win for anywhere between $50 and $125 by a competent gunsmith. My barrel is full custom and was made by the "one who shall remain unnamed". ;)  It's cost was just over $500.

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny,  the only reason I can figure that you spent an extra 400 bucks was to get a different rate of twist.  What did you get?  If I recall correctly, you did a 1 in 20 for your Maxi.

I've got to agree with you and CW.  The .356 seems made for the Handi, rimmed and better performance than the .35 Rem.  Now you guys have got me thinking again......it never stops ::)

Pete,
In part, you're right. My riflesmith didn't want to do a rechamber, he said he could stub one with much more accuracy. I have my doubts, not about his skill, about my shooting ability. His barrel contour and length will also aid greatly in how the rifle balances and swings. The twist is 1:14", both on this and my previous Maxi, which was sold to fund this project. I still have a Maxi, but it is a factory rechamber and a shooting son-of-a-gun. Mom still has hers too. ;)  It appears that the Speer 220gr FN bullet was made specifically for the .356 Win. Velocities range from 2000-2200 depending on the load and that bullet delivers a ton of energy at the muzzle. It's not a long-ranger though. I seldom would consider a shot much past 200yds so it's perfect for that. I hope to level a hog or two with it yet this year or early next.

Thanks, Dinny
