Arizona is taking on immigration once again, with lawmakers collecting donations from the public to put a fence along every inch of the state's border with Mexico. It is an unprecedented effort by a state that is the busiest U.S. gateway for both illegal immigrants and marijuana.

The idea came from state Senator Steve Smith, a Republican who says people from across the nation have donated about $255,000 to the project since the state in July launched a website that urges visitors to "show the world the resolve and the can-do spirit of the American people."

Americans better step up their contributions. At the rate they're collecting funds it will take 55 years (inflation excluded) to get the money they need.

I thought it was 57+.

My guess is that Arizona is trying to protect Arizona, and not the US. They probably don't care if the illegals go elsewhere. Heck, they might even like it if they headed for DC.

Arizona's attempt at building a fence will fail simply by the volume of fence needed, and the maintenance required after construction. I personally don't think a fence is the answer, and have lived in Texas all my life, and would like to stop the influx. The answer is: Deport all the American dope fiends to Mexico that are buying an consuming the dope, prosecute any American that employs an illegal, houses an illegal, or transports an illegal.
As far as the border itself? It would seem to me that helicopter gunships would be more productive backed by armed drones. Along with that, ARMED TROOPS FOR MOP UP AFTERWARDS. Take the money out of the traffic, and the lethality in crossing illegally. Now there is a fence.

Fence? No that costs too much. What is needed is range stakes and AP mines. If the war on drugs/terror were meant to be beneficial to the US citizen, THAT BORDER would have been closed.

fence,s will not help at all. the only real thing is to take away the reasons for coming here. like the well fare, anchor babies . well you know the rest. put Americans to work . alot would not like this but o well we have got to get away from the wellfare state thing

I'd rather see signs placed all along the border that say, "If you cross this line, you will be shot." And then enforce it. The signs should be in English only.

The fence is just another political "feel good" bit of hot air. It won't be built and wouldn't do any good if it was. No illegals are going to leave New Mexico. They get driver's licenses here legally.

Lots of great ideas here. Saw an AZ rancher on tv telling how his neighbor was murdered by illegal drug runners. Main thing is to realize that these people are NOT IMMIGRANTS. Call em what they are. Illegals, criminals, trespassers, squatters, invaders, and treat them accordingly. POWDERMAN.

Right on Powderman. The key word is "invaders" and the penalty shoudl be: shot on sight. There are only two things that will stop the hoards from disrespecting our borders and those are: 1) make the penalty severe and 2) remove all benefits (jobs, medical, drivers licenses, tacos--whatever). The second they cross the border illegally their very life should be forfeit.

Have to get a leader elected that thinks that way so the people will have someone to support and legitamately have a plan to follow. Will a leader be able to bring the congress in line? I think so with the citizens behind the leader, at that point we can give congress no other option. We just have to stick together to elect that leader. ear
