Used vs New prices on N frames
« on: November 25, 2011, 10:12:38 AM »
I seen today a new S&W model 29 in nickel finish with 6'' barrel for $999 and a used S&W model 29 in nickel finish with 8 3/8'' barrel for $1,200.

The used ones seem to hold beyond there value?

I was also eyeing the S&W model 57 w/4'' barrel in nickel too.  I have the m58 w/4'' barrel in nickel and the model 57 w/6'' barrel in nickel too.

It's the nickel plating premium that you're seeing. Nickel guns haven't been produced in ages.

The seller can set the asking price anywhere he wants - doesn't necessarily mean the gun is worth that much (at least to a sane buyer)!

Like anything else, if the seller is willing to wait long enough some fool will come along and pay way more than the item is worth.

However, used Smiths do hold their value and it takes a fair amount of looking to find one at a "bargain" price.

Old verses new?
Old = "NO LOCK" and a forged hammer as well as trigger.
NEW= Two piece barrel, UNNEEDED LOCK  and MIM  hammer and trigger.
You make your pick and spend your money.
As for me ,I don't want any locks or mim parts on my guns.
I'd pay more for an older S&W .
Infact, I have zero intrest in S&W revolvers with the locks.

I buy used guns mostly.
If you don't go into collectors pieces you can get a btter deal.
I have a used S&W with the lock--it doesn't bother me.
As far as MIM parts are concerned--I like em.
