Got a 111 .270
« on: November 26, 2011, 02:04:22 PM »
Put her on layaway today. Price is $229 with a Simmons Whitetail 6x14( that's got to go) in Weaver extended rings( I'd prefer a 1 piece base). She has a checkered birch stock, flat rear bridge and a very nice non-accu trigger. Serial# is F799xxx. Any idea of a year of manufacture? I was looking for an '06, but this one seemed like a good deal and if I dont like the 270 I could always make a 30-06 out of her without too much trouble. Good price? She's in excellent condition, not a mark or ding on her.

You got a good buy and I would have bought it in a minute.  I took a 116 in 270, as a back up gun, to WY, antelope hunting this year.   The wind was too stiff and ranges too long for my Savage custom 6.5 x 55 so after a couple of misses I went to the .270.  I finally took a decent buck at 325 yards which was probably the closest shot I had.  You can always screw a custom barrel on the action if the new gun does not shoot to suit you.
I've rebarreled several just to have a caliber that is not available.  Don't forget to give us a range report.

Picked her up yesterday. Her bore was heavily copper fouled and the scope was toast...The trigger trips at 5 lbs and could use alittle tweaking. The stock bolts were 3 turns loose( wonder if the former owner got rid of her because of accuracy issues?). Gave her a quick clean and went to the range with a box of Winchester 130 gr Power Points and Federal blue box 130's. I swapped the Simmons for an old 4x and groups at 100 were in the 2 inch range for the Federals and about an inch to inch and a quarter for the Winchesters. Both brands hit to the same point of impact, which is VERY nice. Took her home and Sweets'd the crap out of her. Happily the bore gave up the copper pretty easily. Groups and point of impact remained constant even when the barrel heated up. Again niiiice. Cant wait to get loading for her. This is my first 270. Hope things work out. I like this Savage!
