rebarrel project
« on: November 26, 2011, 05:43:30 PM »
i just got my old .308 mauser back from my brother. he had it for a little over a year, and i just cleaned it. but the barrel was so corroded that i couldnt even see through the bore with a light i got it cleaned up, the action is still in great working condition but the barrel is pitted from end to end. so now i am thinking of rebarreling it, but I dont know what calibers i can go to i was thinking about something a little larger bore. but I dont know what it will cost to take it to a smith to have it done. also can anyone tell me how to tell if it is large ring or small ring? thanks any info appreciated

  Hello lil-hunter:
Need info, markings, names any obivious info to know what it is.
As for the bore, there are a lot of products available to remove some levels of rust. IIRC, someone recommended a product named EEZOX for problem bores. I use JB compound or Kroil and a lot of elbow grease, flitz also works on them. If the bbl. is pitted badly then you may need a new bbl. however I have seen rifles with poor bores that were good enough for deer hunting at reasonable ranges, it may surprise you with a good cleaning. Hope this helps.

i would have to go back and look again. this rifle used to hold less than an inch with my handloads at 100 yards but i am just tired of the .308 and would like something a little different.
