I have BIL who has a Kel-tec. We were talking about it Thanksgiving.
Now I didn't argue but I did wonder.
he said he loved it. It fired everytime except for a few times--but the first always fired. They had taken it to the range that day and it only hung up three or four times.
That thing would be a paperweigh for me.

What model was it? The P-32 and P3AT can be picky as to the ammo they like. The PF-9 not so much. I shoot Remington ball ammo in my .32 and it has never jammed nor failed to fire. Not once! Owned it 3 years and counting. My PF-9 handles any ammo well but I prefer Hornady Custom FMJ HP's. Owned it two years without a single misshap. I can step out into my back yard and fire away so I shoot often. One thing that does make a world of differance is simply keeping them clean. People often shoot cheap ammo in them, get them gummed up, and then wonder why they run into problems. Another reason for a Kel Tec to jam is "limp wristing". Because of the light weight, thus noticable recoil, and short travel of the slide it is crucial to keep a firm grip on them. Many people don't. As to weight, you betcha they are light. They are also small, thin and designed specificaly for conceal carry. A job they do very very well. I'm always hearing excuses for why someone with a CCW doesn't carry their firearm. Too bulky, too heavy, too hard to conceal wearing light clothing! Own a Kel Tec and there are no excuses! :)   Reliability wise? I'll put my Kel Tec's up against any semi auto made. Only gun I trust as much is the Springfield XD's.

My P3AT shoots great and everytime. It even groups nice and tight with plain old winchester white box range ammo. Now my PF9 on the other hand had issues with light primer strikes when I first got it, and it only did it to my reloads, not factory ammo. I use winchester primers. Once I cleaned the debris out of the firing pin chamber it now handles my reloads just fine. Other than that it has no issues. Accuracy isn't so great with it either.

I've put a several hundred rounds of both ball and hallow points threw my P-11 with zero failures.  I I've heard that it sometimes takes a hundred or two rounds to break them in or they may require a little buff and fluff but I was fortunate, mine has run like a clock from day one.   I did of course strip it, clean it and lube it properly before I took shot number one.   This should be done with any new firearm regardless of brand.

The first Kel Tec I had wouldn't even have made paperweight status.  Was sent back twice to no avail.  I've had others since then that shot most anything reliably.  My son has a P32 presently that eats anything at all and it gets a lot of it.  Like William, I will not keep anything on me I can't trust.  A good friend who is an accomplished aerobatic pilot told me he always practiced all maneuvers at great altitude to allow him time to recover or bail out until he was 100%+ confident because you only get one chance at life.  I agree completely!  That's why my carry guns eat a steady diet.  It's the only way to keep up that 100%+ confidence.  Even a single failure would be cause for immediate attention and possible dismissal.

My PF-9 was troublesome when I got it 1 1/2 years ago.  I had previously injured my wrist, and a friend pointed it out to me that I may be limp-wristing the gun.  I held it tighter and haven't had a failure in over a year shooting my reloads of every sort.  It goes with me frequently because it's easy to carry, and dependable, but I have a hard time liking a DAO gun, and I don't enjoy shooting this one.  For my short trips here and there, I'll probably learn to carry a 1911, or maybe my CZ75.

Have owned a second generation P-32 for several years and have never had a FTE or FTF using only ball ammo.  My grandson did have a FTE once that quickly was fixed by his previous limp-wristing.  Never happened again.  I agree that they must be keep clean but outside of my revolvers, this pistol is my best performer and is used often either as primary or as my BUG.  I have nothing but good to say about Kel-Tec.

 I have a KT .380 that works well. It jammed twice when new, but after a couple of hundred rounds and bit of polish work on the feed ramp it's been flawless. I've shot Golden Sabers, Hydra-Shoks, cast RN and cast Truncated cone with no problems at all, probably about 400 rounds total.
 The KT is light and concealable and accurate enough for what it is. I like it.

I must admit I wasn’t much of a fan of the plastic guns until about two years ago when I purchased a PF-9; I have come to love the little gun and carry it most of the time.  It fits the front pocket of a pair of Wranglers so well you hardly know it's there.  I have put maybe four boxes of store bought thru it and perhaps 100-150 of my reloads with never a problem.  She sports a CT laser and shoots fairly accurate out to about 25 yards; I think it would serve its purpose if needed for protection.
 
I have been blessed and have a choice of between 25-30 CCW weapons ranging in many different makes and calibers but I will likely continue to carry the PF-9 until she fails me. There is always a SHTF Sig in either 9mm, 357 Sig, .40 or .45 waiting in the safe if I feel the need.

I got a P380 when they first became available. I did the fluff and buff before I fired the first round. I have tried about every type of factory load I could find plus a few reloads and it has been 100% reliable. Certainly not a fun gun to shoot, not a target pistol or a hunting gun but for what it is meant to be I have no complaints.

True about any gun. The same can also be said about anyone who doesn't maintain their firearm properly and who doesn't familiarise themselve's with it thoroughly. It's not always the gun's fault, though the gun usualy gets the blame. All too often it's something as simple as poor choice of ammo. It amazes me that folks will shell out good money for a firearm, particulary one they intend to carry for self defense, and then feed it cheap ammo or stick to a cartridge their firearm simply doesn't like. Many firearms are known, WELL KNOWN, to not like certain cartridges so take the time to learn that right off and save yourself some hassle. Also, I practice with what I carry. That way I KNOW how it funtions and have faith in it and my firearm!

Funny, I can limp-wrist my revolver and it doesn't jam.  Left the dark side and came back to revolvers.  Easy to clear a problem - just pull the trigger again......

guess you never had a primer back out ot a bullet move forward both will tie up a revolver long enough to get one killed  ;)

My comments and thoughts were directed at this Kel-Tec not as a whole but at this piece specifically.
I admit that I don't care for the size of the gun.

I've had my PF9 for about a year and a half, and for the most part (clarified above) it has been 100% with a variety of my handloads.  It inspired me to recently buy a P3AT.  I've only shot 6 FMJs and 6 JHP so far.  Perfect functioning and I will continue to shoot it as I have the opportunity.  It's plenty accurate for rabbit hunting and easy to carry in my pocket.  Recoil is less than the PF9 so it's pleasant to shoot.  I shot a 2 X 4 with the FMJs and of course it completely penetrated it.  I expect that if I ever had to use it in self defense, someone on the wrong end would get perforated.  Not bad for a plastic gun, huh?
