If you have $1k to spend, can wait until January, and only need a 12 ga., there are MANY other choices.  You'll get a better gun with much better resale.  Also, if you stay in the Upland game long enough, i'd bet you'll soon get a hankerin' for something smaller/lighter than the 12.  This means the 12 would be relegated to turkey use - which is a good thing because that opens up the option of looking at the older classics that typically have more/too much drop at comb and heel.  The only drawback with these are the short chambers.

I would not buy new based on what you've stated.

Some suggestions:
Browning BSS/Chas Daly Miroku
Ithaca 200e
Fox Philly Sterlingworth
Parker Trojan

I liked my CZ bobwhite 12ga, but it was just too big. So i got a CZ Woodcock deluxe in 20ga.

I would also suggest looking at the Smith & Wesson Elite SxS shotguns (Dickinson Arms too, same gun). They are a great value

so you think that a used gun is best i need to be Abel to shoot steel in it
so i don't think that the older SxS will work i do have in older savage (fox)
now that i like a lot but cant run steel in it i hunt public land so for
under a $1000. what would you look for
thanks Jim

I use a Remington sxs made by Baikal that I love. I have used it for quail, pheasant and ducks. You should see the looks that I get when I shoot skeet at the local club.  I got it about three years ago new for under $350.00. That would leave a good amount that could be used for shells. That steel and non-toxic shot are expensive. Mine also has the double triggers which remind me of the old school sxs my Grandpa had. Just my two cents.
