1/2 scale ordance rifle
« on: November 27, 2011, 11:47:44 AM »
well i have finally gotten my 1/6 scale 300 lb parrot ready for me to bore it, and hope to have the steel in the lathe for a 1/2 scale ordance rifle, i will be able to turn it then i will take it to my buddys lathe to bore it. 32 in deep bore of 1.5  I plan to do a 10 lb and a 20 lb parrot rifle 6 lb gun and a 12 field howy and a napoleon in half scale  time to buy some more steel i guess,  so is any body making affordable 28.5 inch wheels this wil be a long winter project. ifnothing else i am going to just build the barrels and one carriage to go play with.
    fun stuff,

Rick,
There is no such thing as affordable wheels.  Properly made they are extremely labor intensive.

Truly spoken Zulu, I may have to learn wheel wrighting.  Your idea of multiple tubes for 1 carriage has merit.  Maybe we could swap woodwork for metal work.

well i was out in the barn, and i have enough steel to make two ordance rifles in half scale but that takes up all my large round stock, time to make a trip to the scrap yard, to find some good 5 and 6 inch round stock, yay, although most of the time i find other cool stuff while i am there that i dont need but buy anyway. ohwell,  fun times. the hunt is on,

Rick,

Try Witmers for your wheels.

I have had several sets of cannon wheels made over the years.
They are Almish but will do artillery wheels and do not stock them.

Worth a trip to their shop since you aren't that far away.

i talked to witmeers when i picked up my last set of wheels,  they wont do scale wheels or one offs, they stay busy enough with just stock orders,  last i came back from there was was hauling 4-42 in prairie wheels for my mountain howy and prairi limber.
and as i find everyone else makes 30 inch wheels calling them 1/2 scale but 1/2 scale would be 28.5 inch wheels.   well the hunt is still on, i hope to get some pics up here of the tube soon, i am half way done with the first tube.

I hate making the ordnance rifle,  i am ready to go back to parrott rifles just need the steel to make the band.
to many hours with a 4inch grinder and a die grinder.  bigger guns mean more work for me,

I hate making the ordnance rifle, ...

You need to get a CNC lathe for the Rodman shaped guns.  Even Phoenix Iron complained there wasn't a straight line on the whole thing.

(I know some people say the Wrought Iron Rifle wasn't designed by Rodman but he was on the committee, it does look like his seacoast artillery, and the rifle profile could have easily been made of a few straight tapers for virtually the same weight and strength but it was not.)

Ive found 28" 12 spoke,1.25" wide wagon wheels with solid hubs for 79.00 each,I know there not cannon wheels but the price its not bad,2 wheels for the price of one 30" cannon wheel, then if a person finds 28" cannon wheels you can take the carriage wheels off and build a limber to use them on....

hahahaha  after many hours of measuring and cussing thowing tools and such,  i am able to turn it into a 1/2 scale parrot rifle i left enough steel there to preform a magic trick. now i am on the hunt for banding material,  6 inch OD x 4-5inch ID.
