Hornet bullets?

I really want to load up some 45GR Barnes TSX, but learned this weekend that the 50GR Nosler BT start to tumble at about 15 yards... I cant immagine that a 45GR Barnes will fair any better, considering the extra length of all copper bullets. Has anyone tried them? Or, what bullets have you guys found to shoot well from your 22 Hornet Handies?

I use plain ole .45 grain round nose from Hornady in my K-Hornet.  They work, I can run them up to 3,100 fps and have taken squirrels at 150 yards (before they outlawed the use of center fire rifles for squirrel) so it's plenty accurate.

Is it an OLD hornet with a slower twist? My newer 1-9 twist barrel loves 50 - 55 gr bullets but I have never tried anything lighter, the guy who owned it before me killed a deer with the lighter barnes you mentioned with my hornet. Depending on your twist rate, you may be stuck shooting real light ones.... ?  thejanitor

It is a topper. And based on the 50s tumbling, I guessed pretty slow twist. I plan to confirm actual rate this week. I also have another hornet barrel on the way, so hopefully that one will shoot the 50s better.

Due to popular demand, Barnes has reintroduced their Varmin-A-Tor line of bullets. I had excellent results using their 40gr bullet and H Lil Gun. I sold my hornet shortly after I ran out of these bullets. Guess it's time to get another... ::)  and give a good dose of Vitamin K. ;)

I worked up a load for mine with 50 gr Rem PSP's that shoots quite well, it is a 1/12 twist. It is 9.6 gr 0f IMR4227 I intend to use it on larger stuff or something I do not want to blow up. I am using 34 gr HP for general varmint loads.

I would think that the old topper was either a 1 - 16" or a 1 - 14" twist with the 1 - 16" more likely if it does not stabilize a 50 grain bullet. Try some 34 grain MidSouth Varmint Nightmare hollow points with CCI 500 primers and 12.4 grains of W296 or H110. Low pressure and good results. This is a small game/varmint/plinking load, not for deer. Your new barrel will be a 1 - 9" twist rate and should stabilize the heavier bullets just fine.

This very thing I had wondered on when a 22 hornet was listed not to long ago, thought with a 1-9 twist a 53gr barnes X pill might be a decent deer killer with good placement.

While I have killed deer with the 45 gr round nose bullets out of a Hornet, I have to say that it is a close range deer gun only.  .223 with 60 or 70 grain bullets makes a fine deer cartridge on the other hand.

I bought a Topper 058 .22 Hornet barrel from the classifieds back in the Spring and it is 1in12" twist. Figured it was a 1in9" when I bought it and had dies and 52gr Hornadys ordered, they hit sideways on the target with my Lil Gun loads. Been shooting 40gr and 45gr Sierras and was gifted 2 boxes of Remington factory ammo loaded with 45 grainers. Have an order to go out to Midway this week and have on it the Hornady V-Maxs in 35gr to try. Hope to buy a 1in9" twist barrel someday too!   .DT

I used the 45 grain Barnes X bullet with my Hornet. Shot fine. I loaded the same bullet this year in my 223 Handi and shot my first deer (buck) with that rifle. I know the bullet is on the light side but it performed well. Entrance and exit wound. Shot through the shoulder, the buck dropped on the spot. I did shoot it a second time in the neck to make sure it stayed down.

There is no intention of this being a deer rifle, there are plenty of other critters in Texas. The only targets bigger than rabbit will be Javelina and shoats. None the less, thanks for the info.

I have shot a couple boxes of thise 50G Ballistic tips from my Marlin Bee and Ruger/ Winchester Hornets! Guess I am lucky as ever had a tumbler... I didn't like the "look" as it needed to be seated so deeply to feed form the mags. From the Handi it was seated longer, but still shot well.
 
My newer Handi (<10 years old) loves the old 46G Sierra Hornet bullet as well as the New V-Max 35G Hornadys!! Another bullet I liked was the FP made form Speer for the Marlin Bee... It shoots very well and really "smacks" game with that lil flat point!

That explains it... I finally got around to checking the twist and it ends up being 1:16. I guess that I shouldnt expect it to stabilize 50grain SPBT's of any brand. It looks like I will be trying 35gr vMax, and CW's flat point suggestions next (Midway has them). I ordered a box of the 45gr Barnes X too, for postarities sake, but I dont expect them to stabilize from a 1:16.
The 1:9 barrel came in, so I know it will shoot what ever the 1:16 won't.

I have a Ruger bolt action in .22 Hornet...it is very accurate with bullet weights from 40 gr up through 55 gr. I have not loaded any rounds with bullet weights higher than 55 grains....so I don't know how heavier weights would perform.
 
I use it to take Prairie Dogs in pastures where the distances run about 200 yards or less. It is very accurate with almost no felt recoil. Such a fun gun to shoot.  8)

Give the 36 Grain MidSouth Varmint nightmare HPs a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. They are relatively inexpensive to boot.
