17HMR muzzle blast

For those of you that use this round. How bad does it ring your ears if out hunting or varminting and dont have time to put in ear plugs?

it is not bad about like a 22 pistol  i shoot my 22 mag all the time with no ear plugs no biggy
 center fire is about the only time i wear ear plugs.

A few shots outdoors, not too bad.  I'd hate to shoot anything indoors unprotected.

To me it is very mild. Not that I suggest it for others, but I have shot several hundred rounds a day in open fields, and not used any ear protection, without any ringing, discomfort, etc. etc.
This is with the NEF, with standard length barrel. Some folks may shoot a shorter barrel, that may well be different.

I think the report  is rather mild but sharper. I always use some kind of hearing protection when shooting multiple shots as you only have one set of ears and hearing loss is accumulative and not reversible.

Even a 22 LR will cause some injury to my ears a 22 mag and 17 are louder than a 22 lr.
When hunting deer I forgo hearing protection as I need hearing to hear the deer in my hilly close up hunting. I have not tried my auto damping earmuffs while hunting but it sounds like a worthwhile project to see if I still hear a deer in the leaves.

The only good thing I can say for cumulative hearing loss is that it helps me get to sleep at night.
Hunting, for a few shots, I still wouldnt wear any plugs, but for range sessions yes. Try to save your pieces, you dont know how long you are going to last, and set a good example for others, especially the young shooters.

Thanks  for the info on muzzle blast  while hunting. For you others, I did not want or need to be lectured or educated about hearing loss or how to protect my ears. Go volunteer at a sunday school or elementary and teach kids  >:(

Contrary to the 3legged turtles post, I did not think your post was a lecture at all. Sometimes it's good to be reminded of things we can take for granted.

I reciently learned first hand about hearing loss. I had a battery explode in my face just two months ago on 9/11/11. End result as of Fridays hearing test, Substantial loss in my right ear and Severe in my left. I had very good hearing before this. Now I have big problems in noisy environments. Cannot use right ear at all on phone and the ringing keeps me up at night. This season so far three times deer have walked right up behind me. I never herd them. I DON'T LIKE THIS! 

Just friendly advice protect your hearing!

I feel for you CW, I have terrible tinnitus in my ears also. I didn't take care of them when I was younger. The ringing never goes away. Those great quiet days in the woods hunting get ruined by the ringing. I actually like a slight breeze to drown out the ring.

I'm pretty good at tuning it out now, I have to sleep with AM talk radio as background noise. Believe it or not plain old AM static noise is another thing that works great for tuning out the ring. Tune in between stations for static LOL. Set volume to a level that's just high enough to drown out the ring and you'll be sleeping like a baby. It may take a couple tries for you but it works great once you get used to it.

FWIW, some responses arent necessarily 'aimed' at the OP or another poster, but for others who may visit here on GBO and who may, or may not, be as well versed in the more subtle aspects of the shooting sports. I dont think being reminded that safety is good for us all, and the sport, is a bad thing.

CW, I feel your pain, too! There is hope, though, the effects may diminish over time. They did with me (and I wont bore you all with the details), and I truly hope it will for you. I, for one, will be glad to pitch out a prayer for you, my friend.
