Thanksgiving weekend Raccoons
« on: November 28, 2011, 02:25:25 AM »
The new moon pase and warm weather over Thanksgiving weekend turned out to be outstanding for Raccoons.  We managed to call in 8 of them over three nights of hunting and got 6 of them.  The last night we had to work for it.  The rain and windy conditions proved to be challenging.  We did however have 3 coyotes walk up 60yds from us and find out what all the noise was about.  And we managed to score one bandit.

The two in the first pic got skinned before I could get some photos. LMAO..
It's all a hot mess...........

What did you shoot them with and where were you set up?

Woods, edge of woods, field?

Way to go, sounds like fun.

Do they just come charging in or can you get a rifle shot? Thanks

Sounds like somebody got hungry for those first two ;D

Early in the season I like to use coon pup distress sounds.  Later in the year, I like the coon fight sounds.

I hunt Raccoons a little different than I hunt yotes.  I will play the ecaller as I walk slowly along wood edges or tree lines.  Thick tree lines along ditches or creeks are killer for coon. I play the sound at a moderate level and once in a while I will crank the volume for a 30 seconds.  I will play the caller non-stop for about 20 minutes then stand quietly and scan the trees and ground.  90% of the coons I get are in the trees.  This is why I walk and call.  I seem to bust alot more coon this way.  I would advise to NOT walk close to the wood edges because once in a while, I will get a charger, and its usually quite P'd off!!!  To date, I have yet to get a shot off on one that has charged rigt at me. I usually will yell at them out of instinct and they do an about face, LOL.

Im a 22 mag man when it comes to coons.  The CCI 40gr HP was been outstanding with head and body shots.  Head shots are the best and it almost always causes instant kills (no tracking).  I also like the 22 mag because once in a while I might get a longer shot and the exptra power helps in putting them down quick.

Coons are curious creatures and there is usually no problem keeping them interested as you set up and take the shot.  I also now shine with a red head lamp and make kills with a white light.  The white light doesnt seem to effect them at all and its great to get a full face to look at rather than two glowing eyes.  Raccoon heads are a small target when shooting through a scope without support- even at 40yds.
