The Amazing Grace thread

In the Christmas song thread, I mentioned that I like Amazing Grace. It's not a Christmas song per se, but it's a great and inspiring song. One that really gets me to be thankful for what good things I have in life.
 
I'd like to start a thread here so people can post what Amazing Grace means to them, and maybe post links to good renditions of it, like on youtube.
 
For me, so many things could have gone wrong, but things have turned out good by the grace of God. That song just crystalizes my feelings of gratitude like nothing else.

  Thsat hymn has even greater meaning when we know the history behind it.  John Newton lived his young years lost in sin and depravity eventually becoming the captain of a slave carrying ship.
   Eventually after some trials Newton realized he was headed for hell..he turned to Jesus and asked Him into his heart to be Lord and Savior.  What he found so amazing is that even he, a vile sinner and slave trader...could turn from his vile sins and find a final home in Heaven...all purely by the grace of God.
  Newton later became a pastor and took a pulpit in Olney, England and was a primary persuader as Wilburforce accomplished an end to slavery in the UK.
   I saw a "documentary" TV show sometime ago which claimed that AMAZING GRACE is the best known, best loved song in all the world. I find no reason to doubt that claim..

IG. I watched most of a movie yesterday about him and the song, the movie was called amazing grace. POWDERMAN.  :o :o

I saw a pbs special on the song a number of years ago and it was said by the presenter that he really did not think that you could go any where in the world and play the song that those who heard the music could at least sing a few line of the song. John Newton wrote many Church hymns, Glorious things of thee are spoken, is another of his, seems I read somewhere that he had written over 600 during his lifetime.The song has been played and arranged in manny different styles,played on many different instruments but I would have to say on the bagpipes is my favorite.

Without a doubt, I have to agree with DEACONLLB, Amazing Grace played on the bagpipes is one of the most moving songs ever.  It never ceases to amaze me how much the tune while so simple, and short, touches your heart and soul.

GB just recently reduced the number of religious themed forums. Lets not add to it again

I was sitting on an airfield in Alaska one day waiting for a plane that was to pick me up there. It was at an Indian village,Northway, and really in the middle of nowhere, the airstrip is quite a ways from the village. But it was a customs airport and a few planes coming into the US from Canada stopped there to clear customs.

A plane landed and 4 or 5 folks got out of the plane and they had bagpipes. They were apparently going some place to perform, so they started practicing. One of the songs they played was Amazing Grace. What a heart warming thing that I was able to hear this special special song played on such a appropriate instrument in the Alaskan wilderness, and I was just about the only audience. Brought tears to my eyes, and that don't happen often.

I learned to play guitar on Amazing Grace. The greatest Gospel song ever written about ME! I was asked to sing Amazing Grace with just me, and my guitar, at the biggest funeral I have ever attended, and the song itself kept the butterflies away, as I noticed when sitting down with the guitar, that not only was the Sanctuary full, but the balcony, and folks were standing in the isles, and outside.
Like I said, the greatest song ever written. It gave the family comfort, and the singer (myself) comfort.
