Contender serial number manufacture dates?
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:53:16 AM »
Is there a data base of some sort to tell when a Contender was made by the serial number? Just wondering how old my G2 actually is.

If you have a real G2 and not something someone told you was a G2 and I see lots of old contenders that are easy open that dealer calls G2 it will not be too old as they were introduced in 2003 so that would make it no older than 8 yrs old. If it is one of the older contenders with the flat side and engraving then there is a list somewhere on the forum that gives the dates of mfg for them dont know where right now but Tim will know. Please understand that I am not saying you dont know the difference or what you have because some who are new to contenders have called the easy open a G2.
Contenders are listed as type one not easy open, type 2 that are easy open and introduced in the eighties and then the G2 that has the raised edges on frame like the Encore introduced in 2003 Hope this is of some help you could call TC and give them sn and they can tell you what year and if they have did any warrenty on it. In asking I assume you bought it used.

Raised edges, no engraving Stainless steel. 3 position selector on the hammer.
Ser. #SG34XX.

As a side note, I just put the  10" SSK 45-70 barrel I bought last week on it, and it really feels rough when pressing the trigger guard to open the barrel. Is the the sigh of a problem? I don't get the same rough feeling with my other three T/C barrels.

The release and locking bolt on the barrel may have some rough edge on it or just need cleaning and a very light oil, it will be in barrel and not frame if other barrels work fine.

The list in the faq is for pre G2 contender dating.  I haven't seen a G2 table.

Actually, the G2 prototypes were made in late 1999 (I personally handled one of them on 1/17/00).   They started getting into private hands sometime later that year FWIW.   No idea on their serial number range, but some could be up to 11 years old now.
Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus
