Bedding 10/22 and seeking advice
« on: November 28, 2011, 11:41:11 PM »
What are you guys doing (and not doing) to bed the action and/or barrel on your 10/22?  I’ve already ordered an “elevating” barrel retainer (Gunsmither) and VQ’s “bedding system” to get started but I’m not finding overall agreement on what or how it should all be set in epoxy, other than most insist the barrel must be supported after the retainer.  I had fully floated in mind but now I ain’t so sure.  What has been working for you?

This one is the Compact still with factory 16.5” blued skinny barrel in an otherwise plain but pretty shorter pull Walnut stock with no barrel band.  It tends to vertical string though not quite as bad as the other 2 or 3 standard carbines I’ve owned in the past, but the trigger on this one was by far the worst I’ve ever encountered on anything.  I too often interrupted making a shot just to make sure that I hadn’t neglected to take it off “Safe”.  So after missing yet another opportunity to dispatch cat food thieving possum I sought and received instant gratification through the purchase of a Volquartsen trigger housing/group costing about what I paid for the gun.  This two minute “drop-in” made a very significant improvement to the gun’s operation but it has also infected me with some sort of “sickness”.  Now I “must” do more!

One question that I always ask 10/22 tinkeres is...what are you trying to accomplish??  Target, plinking, bench rest a bit of each?  I think a longer standard weight after market barrel is a good thing...I'm not much for heavy weights cause I use mine as a Fancy plinker.  I have the Altemont model with the 20" barrel but it's been accurized.  Shoots 1/2" or less at 50yards and an 1" or so at 100 with match ammo and if I haven't had too much coffee. All this and a trigger job for just a bit more than $200.  I think you should check Connecticut Precision Chambering before you spend anymore hard earned cash.

Thanks Doc, “Fancy plinker” bout covers it.  I’m trying to stay with the factory skinny barrel mainly because there won’t be much pretty Walnut left for forend sides if the channel is opened to clear .920”.  I’ve already happened across ct-precision.com and will likely become a bolt/barrel tune-up customer if the DIY stuff doesn’t get me where I want to be.  I want to properly bed it first and then, unless Ruger totally blew it on my barrel’s internals, a decent bolt, chamber, and crown along with the VQ trigger should get me plenty happy.  My brain is still warped from trying to make Remington 700 and M77 Mk.II happy.  Like with my Contenders I don’t think the 10/22 will want to play by the same rules.   :-\
