Well, how'd you do?
« on: November 29, 2011, 01:11:53 PM »
I can't say we saw many deer, with the clear skys and bright moon, I think there was a lot of movement after dark.  But I did manage to get a doe with my Contender in 7-30 waters and a 5 pt with my .308.  I should have taken my Contender that afternoon, but I was tired of carrying 2 guns.  The Contender for up to 150 yds and the 308 for longer distances.  The 5 pt was only 120 yds away.... oh well.

Hope you all had a good season so far.

well it has been a ruff gun season here in southern mi.
i have gotten two does so far. but still hunting till dec, 31st
we have had a hard time with poaching.
this guy uses a 223 and a spot light. he has even been seen trying to run deer down with his truck.
i say WE as the whole neighbor hood. have gotten this guy busted by the dnr and state police this year.  illegal hunting, recreational trespass and a felon in possession  of a fire arm.
now if the charges stick.i think he has been paying someone off to stay out of jail. myself im hopping for a habitual felon and life under the jail. 5 yrs ago he lost his truck/gun and hunting license fined $1500.00 the dnr took a set of horns he had just cut off  27" wide 12 point truely a monster he had shot and cut the horns off and was going to leave the deer in the feild to rot.

Yah, lotta poachers kicking in after the early season.  There were tons of deer in Central Southern Mi until right before bow season, then a lot dried up.  Was a lot  of shooting going on though , even when it was bow only season, and there's only one reason for that.  8(

I had the worst season in 20 years.  I had one button buck at the bait pile at 5:00 one evening....that was it all season.  The trail camera showed me they were in after 7 pm and gone by 6 am.  I have pictures of a 3 inch spike, a tall antlered spike, his twin with a broken left antler, Tacklebury's deer's twin brother, a 4 point, a bird's nest dinky six, a really nice six and a nice 8.  Surprisingly, there were more pictures of bucks than does.  I saw the nice 6 point on the run at 5 pm one evening still hunting, but couldn't get a shot.  Saw a couple of does, but no tags in Mackinac County.  That was it for 15 hunting days.  Hopefully the ML will get a chance to crack.  I think it's a case of too much food around, mild weather, and no reason to move.

No daytime movement around here either.
Saw a nice one early on opening day, couldn't get a clear shot so just watched him disappear into the brush.  Saw a smaller one (guessing about a 6 point) later in the week.  He was chasing two does and they all flashed across a two-track about 100 yards away from me.

Had a doe permit for southern Menominee Co and drove down there the second Friday and filled that, so at least have some meat in the freezer.

Got some days free to hunt this coming week with the old smokepole so haven't given up yet!

We're getting snow right now (Iron Mtn) and I've heard up to 4".  I have my 4 pt or better tag left so I could muzzle load.....but it is nice just to sit here by the fire and watch it snow out the window.

Nice buck there.  ;)  I'm finishing the last 15 pounds of venison jerkey the next 3 days.  ;)  I jerked this whole buck except the backstraps and a 10 lb bag of chili meat I set aside.  I grind up the  heart into the chili meat and it adds a great bit of flavor.  Gonna stop out to the farm and see if I cannot catch a doe standin around.  Going to Florida over Christmas break, so won't have a chance for late doe season to use it.  Been wanting to put a round ball from my Kentucky pistol or Hawken through one.  ;)

didnt see anything bigger then a 4 pointer and in the up it has to have at least 3 points on one side to shoot. but out of 8 guys at camp 4 8pointers were shot so overall we had a good year at camp. Saw more does then last year. Funny thing was alot of them were without fawns. I dont know if theres not enough bucks to breed them or the wolves and coyottes are getting them.

Sorry to hear that.  Was a tough season for a lot down in central mi too.  Guys did really well about 20 miles north and up, but I think it just stayed too warm.  8(

I hunted nearly every day of the rifle season and saw 8 to 13 deer every day.  I let a 4 point go by opening morn, and shot this buck in the evening,

After that, i shot two nice dry does, here's one of them,  (she wasn't in the orchard when i shot her)

  And here's the other one,

I could have shot plenty of deer, but i just don't need that much meat.  I did enjoying seeing them every day though, i have a great spot to hunt from,

  Some came pretty close too,

Anyway, it was another good year here...

Hunted south eastern Michigan this year. Let a 3 inch spike go opening day and a what appered to be a 3 point in a hurry to get some place. Total of 30 deer seen opening day. Second day was much the same except the bucks seen. I saw between 17 and 40 deer per day all thru fire arm and muzzle loader season. I did shoot a spike on the 20th of nov that was chased on to my property from a grassy swale in the corner of a green field next door. It was wounded is why I didn't let it walk, it was having diffaculty walking any way.

Blew it on the last day of muzzle loader season on a nice 8 point.
I fermly believe that the aloowing baiting again in southern michigan changed the deer patterens from what they were till the week end before fire arm season.
