17MACH2 Contender
« on: November 30, 2011, 02:06:58 AM »
For those that have not shot the 17MACH2 you don't know what your missing! Mine is accurate as heck. Out of the 14" barrel it clocked a little over 1900FPS compared to my 14" 22LR at 1200. Head shots on tree rats do not exit! But talk about puffing a head! After a head shot the head looks haft again as big. I have mine topped off with a 3X9 Nikon rifle scope.

The wood sets made from figured Claro Walnut. About 20 coats hand rubbed Lin Seed Oil, three coats Johnson paste wax. Mounted with all SS hardware.

The forearm works good on the rest and in the field. About 2" wide and flat with rolled edge's at the frame tapering and more rolled towards the end. This way it works good in both worlds.

David,
I agree, I got mine this summer and haven't been able to shoot it as much as I want.  The two times I did go I was very happy at 50 yd, I want to stretch mine out to 100 yd and see what happens.  Nice looking setup,

Nice report on an interesting an useable TC.  I can't get over the great looking stocks that you put together.  Finish and fit show your attention to detail.  Too bad for the squirrels that it shoots as good as it looks.   :)

David,
Just wondering what ammo your 17 likes best?  I've tried a couple of different brands but the Remington Premier 17gr Accutip V Boat Tail shoots the best in mine.

I had a 23" Contender barrel in 17M2. It was very accurate, like less than 1/2" at 100 yards. 200 yard targets were a sometimes thing. Sold it to another shooter here and he and his kids really like it.
I have a 93 Savage in 17HMR so don't really miss the 17M2.

I will have to save my pennies to get you to do a stock set for me later. You do fantastic work.

Leadman,
David does fantastic work, I have one of his target forends.  It is 2" wide at the bottom, when you lay it across a rest or bags it sure makes it nice steady rest, #1 in my book.

Hey Joe, I have never tried the Rem's. Mine shoots great with the CCI's.

Beautiful figure and color in that stockset.  I had a Super 14 in HM2 but traded it for a .45/70 Hunter barrel.  It was extremely accurate with a 6-24 riflescope on it but it just didn't fill a niche for me.  I have a Bullberry, match .22 for paper punching and squirrel hunting if I choose to.  It makes a great little shooter but I just didn't shoot it as much as I thought I would.  Besides, I can load up .45/70 ammo with black powder  :) .

chiefs50,

Hey Joe - good to hear from you.  I didn't pick up on your handle earlier on in this thread.   I'm glad you are happy with the barrel and that it has found a permanent home.  It is a sweet little shooter.  I'm having a lot of fun with the .45/70 I got from you as well.

Sadly :( , I've not had a HM2 in pistol form, yet, but I do have a 23" Contender rifle barrel that I cut to 19" and recrowned.  I thought the 23" was way heavy and cumbersome for a Contender Carbine.  At 19" it is an absolute dream 8) .  With the heavy barrel and 17 bore there is still enough metal left to hold good and still.  I was a little leary of doing a crown on a 17 but it worked out great and is wicked accurate.  I've only been shooting the Eley in mine so far but it loves it.  Haven't really put it to the test yet as far as group size but it hits anything I want to hit exactly where I want it hit :D  and that makes the 'ol man happy ;D .
