Need Help on Hogue Grips for Blackhawk
« on: December 03, 2011, 08:23:45 AM »
In the process of trying to replace factory grips with Hogue rubber grips.
Following instructions on putting the stirrup on the frame, I do not see how that pin that fits in the stirrup is going to go through  the space below the piece of metalbox that holds the hammer spring and the bottom of the frame. I cannot get the pin through that space.

I called Hogue but they are not open on Saturday`s, so thought I would check in with the experts on the forum.
Any help would be appreciated!!

Hey Streak,

As I recall, there should be 2 pins with the grip and 2 holes in the srurrup.  Either pin position should work unless there was some redesign of the grip in some way.  Curious......

Hate to tell you this, but per Hogue contacts, they don't make a grip yet if your's has the internal lock in the frame.  I bought a set of Mono-grips at the same time as I bought my new Blackhawk and was pretty geeked about getting the grips on.  It ended up poorly with my brand new frame scratched and such.  I was peeved and called them and they said they probably wouldn't be supporting the locks.  8(

Yeah tacklebury!
I found out today that I had the same problem as you!Mine also had the internal lock, and yes I scratched up my frame too! On top of a few choice words and
temper tantrum. Hogue said that they were  working on the problem and to contact them in a couple of months! Sorry I think I will probably get me some nice wooden or bone grips  for my Blackhawk, any ideas??

Personally, I'd recommend Private's Grips.  Lotta guys on the Ruger boards use his as well as a few others.  I love Esmerelda's grips, but she rarely has single action ones available.  CLC grips is another that sells on the Ruger forum.  ;)

Private will do specialty requests also and is nice to work with.  He quoted me about 60 bucks for a custom combo I wanted so he's a good price also.  ;)

I have a Pachmayr grip that works with the new Blackhawk with the lock.
Package states "Ruger New Model Blackhawk RB" Part number 03137 - ordered from Brownells
It is a 2 piece grip, but is comfortable and covers the back of the frame and takes a lot of sting out of the .357 rounds.
The grip extends below the frame for me and lets me get all fingers on the grip.
Hope this helps.

Tackle

I looked at the short barreled version of your BH and have been also looking at a Lipsey's short barrel Flattop. Can the grips on these two be replaced with Standard wood grips from Ruger?

Thanks
HWD

I haven't had a chance to see the Lipsey's up close.  You might ask your question at the Ruger Forum as lots of guys have them there or maybe Graybeard will chime in as I think he has two of em.  ;)  I believe they are XR3-RED's though, just like mine.  8)

My flat top is a Bisley. I've not seen the grips off of a regular flat top with the XR3-RED grips. I've held them in the gun store but haven't brought one home. I can tell you tho the grips on the Lipsey's flat top will NOT fit current production BHs that are not flat tops.

I went over that with a half dozen folks at Ruger trying to order a set of their white grips for mine. Bottom line of their message to me was nope it won't fit. I don't know if the flat tops that are not Bisleys do or don't have the internal lock. My Bisley doesn't but my Single Six and BH 45 Colt both do.
