Howdy!
« on: December 04, 2011, 03:49:05 PM »
I'm getting ready to order an accessory barrel for my SB-1 framed .410 shotgun. I was originally planning on ordering the .44 mag barrel but while I was looking at the options I noticed the .410/ .45 colt barrel and since I hand load, I'm now leaning towards it for more options in loads. I just want to make sure its a rifled barrel and not smooth bore. Does anybody have any experience with this barrel? Thanks in advance for any help.

Yes, it is rifled with a removable choke tube that gets removed when shooting 45 Colt.

WELCOME!!
Yes its rifled, BUT it has a chamber for a 3" 410.... quite a jump for the 45Colt. Many find mediocre accuracy at best form it. Besides its on a SB1 frame and heavy 45 Colt hand loads are at max for this receiver.

How does H&R use a 3" chamber without allowing a 454 Casull to be chambered in it? I know on Rossi's 45/410 guns they have 2 1/2" chambers if it isn't also for 454 (like the Raging Judge).

The 45/410 I had would chamber a Factory 460S&W. It was that a way from the factory. I never even entertained the idea of shooting one .The barrel on those are softer than the rifle barrels and questionable as to weather or not it would contain the higher pressure loads. It shot very well for a shotgun using reg 45 colt loads I could hit the other end of the barn every time, just not in the same place. It holds the honer of being transaction number One for me on GBO ;D
It also only has a bead front sight . They do require drilling and tapping for rifle sights or scope mounts.
There are some options of longer brass that helps the accuracy. Do a search on 450 Mongo here.
And PLEASE for your sake and the safety of others remember just because it fits does not make it safe to shoot.

That would leave a mark! :o   FWIW, a 444M cartridge will chamber in my dad's old Model 24 Savage 22/410.  That's why they stamp the cartridge ID on the barrel. ;)

Welcome aboard Frito one of the things with the 45/410 is actually it's limitations depending on what you want to do with it. Do a search here and there has been much discussion on it. Are you a frito employee I work at the Beloit plant. Kurt
