m28 cylinder length question
« on: December 05, 2011, 08:49:11 AM »
I can measure mine, but in comparison to a 45 Long Colt m25 cylinder, how long is the m28?  I have a pre-model 28 that I'm seriously considering making into a 45 Colt.

I would think the cylinders would be the same length, no?

Thanks - redleg

I would suggest you just break down and buy the .45 Colt you want? I doubt you could ever get the price out of any conversion after modified from original, especially in todays market with older gun prices so high? Besides, then you have two S&Ws.

Steve,

In general, I agree with your statement.  I too, do not like modifying original guns.  In this case, I picked up the 1954, M28 for a very good price.  It is missing its original grips, but otherwise is a very solid 98%.

I also have a slightly used 3.5" barrel from a m27 (pinned) that I was thinking would make a very cool, never produced, 45 Colt if it were to be rebored.

It may be just a dream, but I think the above combination would make a right-fine and classic N-frame that was never offered.  A 5-screw N-frame, recessed cylinder 45 Colt, 3.5" light barrel, adjustable sights.  Hmmmmm.

In this case, I would only need to refinish the barrel after reboring to match the m28 finish.  --OR-- Refinish the whole package (including checkering the topstrap) to mock the m27 level of finish.  That is, no doubt, a more costly option though.

Oh well, I think Bowen may bet the piece soon anyway - one way or another...

You need to remember, S&W never counter bored any .45 Colt cylinders, only the .22LRs and magnums, and therefore the cylinder stop wouldn't be right(Would need modified also)?

You're right Steve and that cylinder stop is becoming more of a concern - probably a real road block.  I don't know yet if the cylinder can handle 45 Colt w/the counterbore, but I'm sure it could only handle SAMMI length cartridges max.

The m28 I have has a few options in its future...

1) Sell it, as it is a fine example of the model and without the original grips (the only detractor from true collector status), it will make a very fine, otherwise original, shooter.  When I bumped the sideplate off, the internals had caked up factory grease on them!  It is in near new mechanical condition.

2) Trade it for something +/-$ that would not be a .357.

3) Convert to 44 special as is w/ its 4" barrel or with the 3.5" barrel from the m27.

4) Keep it and try to find some period grips for it so my heart feels better and try to like the .357 mag.

Good points, and thank you.

With the current price escalation on the older N frames, I suggest that you do nothing to "improve" your five screw.
No such thing as too dead.

Sawfish - your thoughts are like mine.  Prices are going up - I may just have to hang on to this one which is a first year Highway Patrolman - 1954.
