lathe repair
« on: December 05, 2011, 12:18:08 PM »
well my lathe is down, well i put it down before i caused any damage.   chuck speed selector rods spring pins have worn out the holes in the shaft. and its kicking it self out of gear,  reminds me of my old truck,   i will be replacing the rod with a new one or repair the old one,  is there any interest in this with pics of repair and how to do it? or not bother and this is something everyone else already know.?

By all means, post the pix.   ;)
There MIGHT be someone else with a 1338 that is of about the same vintage!

This is a Harbor Freight lathe?  If not, they probably won't have the right parts.

Rampa Room has it fixed and was turning a barrel whilst talking on the phone with me.... I think he found that a roll pin had sheard and caused the issue....not long after that his battery on his phone died.... ending the call.........

Sorry I am late here, I have experience repairing Davis Standard, Mazak, and American Eagle lathes and Mills.  Most common repairs include clutch pack tensions and replacement, and replacing the various roll pins.  Next to that stoning the "ways" and replacing the "gibs" are about all you want to tackle.  Everything else requires either shaft or gear replacement, or in extreme cases replacement of the housings.

Change the oil on at least an annual basis, and keep the ways oiler topped off.
