I was at the range and a fellow there had the Ruger in 357 mag and at 50 yards he could only get 3 inch groups no matter what he shot?

At one time I owned the entire "77" line of short actions. The 77/50 was the most accurate. The 44 was OK but 4" 100 yard groups are nothing to write home about. The day I "passed" on a solid 150 class buck because I was not sure I could get a clean shot on him I sold it.  I had a Hornet and 22M I spent allot of $$ tuning them up even going so far as to freeze the barrels! They did shoot better more consistant groups but not nearly as accurate as I expected. I sold them all off. My Marlins shot circles around them as do my Handis.

Same here,I was at the range shooting next to a guy with a new 77/44 my handi and marlin put the ruger to shame. I had the lever action [ruger] years ago and could not get better than around 4'' also. I like ruger bolt actions but not in pistol cal.

Seems that lack of accuracy is a pretty common complaint from 77/ shooters. Pity, they're nice looking little rifles.

My Brother-In-Law just bought a 77/44 for deer hunting because his bother has one. I tried to tell him to get a Handi rifle, but his brother told him he would handload for the Ruger and get it to shoot great and it was a repeater, blah, blah, blah. :(

On a different note. I have a 77/17 that shoots very well, it may be the most accurate gun I own on a calm day. To get it to shoot that well; it has an after market barrel (SS Volquartsen Heavy barrel) and a Rifle Basix trigger too. It was the target model to start with so it had a SS receiver and laminated stock ;) Got some bucks in that one! :o

Good Shooting and Good Luck
