Savage 940 cracked aluminum receiver repair.
« on: December 06, 2011, 10:29:15 AM »
I have an older Savage 940 chambered in .410 that has a 2" long crack running long ways in front of the trigger guard.  I don't have aluminum welding capabilities and it's not worth paying someone to fix it.  I was thinking about drilliing a hole at the back of the crack and using some aluminum welding rods that melt with a propane torch.  I know this isn't a real weld its more like a solder.  Since this is in a low stress area of the receiver do you think it will work?

Honestly, the word you used to describe it, solder, would be my thought.  I'd get some good silver solder (10kpsi type) and slowly heat the frame and add flux then the silver solder should work right into the crack.  I think at .410 pressures it'd do well.  ;)

I think that if you investigate further, the frame is most likely ZA a zinc die cast alloy, with some aluminum content, you cannot silver solder it, or aluminum for that matter, the melting temp is not much higher than lead tin solder, there are solders that will work, as well as welding materials for it, but can be quite tricky, once the temperature is reached to weld it, a little extra heat will cause it to sag or run, if you trust epoxy,it may be the easiest solution

It turns out it was a westpoint 949 made by savage.  I gt my numbers all messed up.  Well I tried the alumiweld sold at harbor freight.  I practiced on scrap peices of aluminum and it worked pretty good.  When I got to my receiver it didn't work so well.  I had a hard time getting it to temp.  It was displacing heat too fast.  I was using mapp gas.  I almost had the crack filled perfectly when a chunk melted out of the front.  I also noticed some heat checking, so I'm not going to mess with it any more. Oh well it was a free $50 shotgun that was in bad shape.
