What Scope is on Your .22?

I have lost my patience with the damn Tasco 4X40 WC  i have on my Brno model 2. Got it back from Tasco for the second time and its just as bad as when i sent it! Just want to know what everyone else is running on their 22s. I have a spare Leupold VX1 3-9x40 but dont know what it would be like strapped to a little Rimfire! Cheers..

I have heard good things about swift scopes, but have never tried them. The price is right and they have a good warranty. I intend to put one on my 22 mag and try it out.

Doesn't sound like you would approve of the Tasco I have on my 10/22.  It is one of the large objective 3-9 World Class scopes and it works great.

Try your Leupold.  I think it would be great.  If I had the $ I would have on on mine.  One point I have found is that sometimes rifle scopes have to be shimmed to work well on .22s.

Good Luck!

Jgalar : Think twice about the Swift and their warrenty I sent a 4x12 with ao back to them for repair and they returned a 3x9 with ao back and said the 4x12 wasnt made anymore and the 3x9 is what I was going to recieve I am still awaiting their responce to a letter to the supervisor in the warrenty dept. to clarify why they sent a lesser quality and price scope back, poor service if you ask me.  :D    JIM

They still list the 4-12. There are some mindless gerbils working at service depts at all gun manufacturers. I had one from Remington tell me that Remington's warranty dept was closed permanently and that unless I had the purchase receipt I could not get the gun serviced under warranty.

Let me know if/when you get your problem settled. What problem were you having with the scope?

........I have a few of the Leupold 3-9 EFR compact scopes made for rimfires with the adjustable objective and love them......the bigger 3-9 you have will have parallax problems at the normal rimfire ranges.....you can minimize the effects by consistant cheek weld but that is often hard to do in the field and from different shooting positions.....on one of my full size bolt  guns I have a Zeiss 4.5x14-44mm and love the extra powder for some uses and on the full size gun it looks "normal" to me and I have had several other shooters who started looking for higher power scopes for their guns......but on a small light carbine I use for fun walking and shooting ....I have a small compact 4x Leupold.....and on that gun it looks right.....good luck and good shooting!!

Jgalar :  Yes I know they still show a 4x12 scope mine was the 664M model and it was discontinued, the problem I was having with it was the optics got vary fuzzy/blury so I sent it back for repair, I thought it might have a leak in it and was hoping to get it resealed instead I recieved a lesser scope the scope was mounted on a 223 rifle so it wasnt  a recoil issue anyhow I wrote them a letter explaining that it was a specific power for a specific caliber and that I didnt appreciate recieving a lesser scope as a quick fix, still waiting their responce to the letter and in the meantime I will be telling everyone how I feel about their warrenty plan. :D    JIM

My son has a Tasco 3x9x40 Pronghorn mounted on his Savage .22 and it is a very good scope for $39.  The optics on the Pronghorn are very good.  I mounted a Nikon Fixed power 4x32 on my Ruger 10/22 and it's alright but not the quality I expected for $99.  I would have to recommend the Pronghorn over the Nikon.

Weatherby223,

I hear what you say about Tasco.  Sorry you had to learn the hard way like I did.  I know what you are going thru.  I have Burris 4x-16x 44mm scopes on all of my Ruger rimfires(5 10/22's for the family and 2 77/22's for ME  :-D ).  Clear, sharp all the way to the edges and this is the model Burris makes for rimfire/air rifle use.  AO adjusts down to less than 7 yards.  A bit less money than a Leupold but of just the same quality in my opinion.  Same lifetime warrantee and they back up their product by making their customers happy.  I also use these scopes on my air rifles, too.  Lawdog

My Remington 541 has a Weaver 2X7 rimfire scope on it. I did have a compact Leupold 4x on it but I wanted more power. I dont really like the looks of a full size scope on it although am sure it would work fine.

I regularyly use scopes intended for high powered rifles on .22 rufles I put together for family and friends and have never had a paralax problem.  As I said in an earlier post sometimes I have to shim a scope to match it to a rifle, but sometimes that happens even on higher powered guns as well,

On my Rem. 241 I have an old Redfield 1x-4x with a 1" dot reticle. The dot is big enough a 1x to pick up easily for running game, jack rabbits, yet is fine enough at 4x to make precision shots a reasonable 22 ranges. It is a centerfire scope and I haven't noticed any parallex problems. The Rem. 241 is a full size rifle and the scope doesn't throw off its balance. The scope is about the same size as Leupold's compacts. That is what I would buy now if I were going to get a hunting scope for a 22. I would have Leupold put a 1" dot in it and set the parallex for 75yd. Probably in the 1 1/2x-5x to 2x-7x range.

A couple of my .22s wear an entry level 4x Bushnell.    The Bushnells are clear and bright enough for the distances and condition for which I use them.  Never had a problem with either.

I do have an ABolt .22 which wears a 2x7 AO RWS air rifle scope with target knobs.  The target knobs come in handy when shooting at distances out to 100+ yds and being able to dial the appropriate scope elevation to fit the distance.  Great scope with graduated, repeatable settings.  Took it off my RWS/Dyana model 48 air rifle and put it on the ABolt to see how it would work.  It was a great fit.

Jgalar :  Update on the Swift scope problem as of today, I will have to say I miss judged Swift, today I was informed by Steve Cutler Supv. of the repair dept. in Boston Mass. that I would be recieving a new Swift 676M in place of the 656M FREE OF CHARGE for their oversight and to keep the 656M as a gift for their mistake, their reason for the delay in responding was all the warenty work is being transfered to San Jose, Ca. and all the paper work is tied up in a backlog.  So anyone who might have taken my concern about their warenty policy I feel they have gone as far out of their way to satisfy a customer as can be expected.  My thanks go out to them. :D  :D    JIM

I started out with this configuration:
Leupold
VarIII 6.5-20 EFR
VarIII 6.5-20X50 LR

However, after getting married I have found that Sightron Scopes work just as good for the money and have a better warranty.

I have added a Sightron SII 14X to my .22 arsenal.

My rifles are all used for silhouette and varmiting.

Take a look at Sightron if you don't want to spend for a Leupold.  Sightron will just give you a new scope over the counter if you have a problem with your old one.

My two cents

Thanks for the replies guys! I have put the Leupold on the Brno and its perfect. It just sits on the Gun like the Tasco did and that was only a 4X40. I have left the power at 6X and dont seem to have any Parallax problems. No more than the Tasco anyway. I just have used the lowest Rings i could find and i can hold the cross hairs rock-solid on the target in any position.  :D

I have a 10-22 with custom barrel and hogue om.  I mounted the Bushnell Sportsman 3-9x32AO w/target turrets.  The optics are very bright in the woods and the target turrets track exceptionally well for the price I paid (75.00 locally, internet is cheaper).  It's a thrill to use when "threading the needle" through tight branches when going after the squirrel that thinks he's invisible.  The combo works well and I'm tempted to put one on a centerfire except I'd like more power for long range target.

Great scope for the money.  Your results may vary.

One that I haven't seen mentioned but I feel worth looking into is a Simmons Aetec you can get a 3.8-12X44 with AO for between 100 - 150$ on E-Bay. This model also comes with a 4" sunshade. I have one on my Savage Mark II .22 and find it to be clear and consistant. I'm really happy with it. Good scope for the money.

I have had so many problems with scopes, that
I wish I could make my own!
I have taken to purchasing used "OLD" scopes
from pawn shops and trying them!
The only  scopes I have that are worth a crap
are all "OLD" Tasco's!
Simmons,Redfield,Bushnell,Burris,The list goes on and on
as to ones I have tried and had no luck with.
I can't afford $500 - 1000 for some of the Really
High end scopes, so I can't speak on them.

To answer the question:
I have an original Tasco world class on my rimfire.

I'm partial to older Weavers; anything from a J4 3/4" to a K12. they just look better on the older guns I tend to have (mostly long barreled single shots).

Weatherby, if your BRNO is like my CZ 452 Lux (open sights), I would recomend the Leupold 4X rimfire special. With Millet low split rings it sits low and the front just behind the rear sight. Not a large scope, but it's crisp and clear with a fine plex retical. I've had the scope for about 5 years, it's been on several rimfires, never a problem. Even at 100 yards the retical covers very little of the target.

Thanks for the input HAMMERHEAD and everyone who replied .HAMMERHEAD, My rifle is the 452 Lux but it is the custom model without the opensights. I may look for a more suitable scope for the rifle in the future when i get another Rifle that the Leupold will suit better, but for now it seems fine bolted on and did'nt miss a Rabbit on the weekend, 19 through the eye and 8 through the back of the head with only 1 miss (my Fault!) too damn eager! All shots were  from 20 yards to about 90 yards under spotlight.

I have a 10/22 and a Marlin 60. both guns are stock and carry a Simmons 4x32. When I trick out the 10/22 I will put a better scope on it. Right now they both do the job as well as I need.

I use only one brand scope Leupold.... Most of mine are VARIX III 6.5x20 40MM.  Cost more but you'll never miss a hunt because your scope got all fogged up  :(   or the repeatability isn't there for shooting in competition.

Somebody said for scopes and all optics you get what you pay for, and it's very true in optics.  I wouldn't trade my Swarovski 10x40's for anything :-)

Have the Vari-X 2-7x28mm Compact/RF Special on my 77/22.  A little pricey, but I take squirrel hunting very seriously!
